My 7 year old son was diagnosed with a 20 degree T8 curve. He does gymnastics for the last 3 years. Do you think that the curve is the result of practicing gymnastics, or it could be genetics? Up to this point I heard many theories and nobody was able to give me a specific answer. Also, I am worried that the angle of the curve is going to get worse in time. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

    Hi Kalarasy

First relax, and take a deep breath :-)

The Gymnastics if anything would be good for his back and his back muscles. Gymnastics is good for building up strength and making the muscles in the body strong and supple.

There are some genetical link theories on Scoliosis, but I don't think they're quite in the concrete evidence stage :-)

Is your son under the care of an paediatric orthapaedist for monitoring of his scoliosis?. Yes scoliosis can get worse with time (not always though, some stay stable), and it needs monitoring to keep checks on it.

Your son would have either idiopathic or congential scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis has no known cause, and congenital scoliosis is due to a malformation in the spine; usually a hemi vertebrae. They would have been able to tell which one your son has, from the x-rays that were taken at diagnosis, they may/may not have told you them.

    Hope this stuff helps

      thank you

Thank you for replying to me. We will see a specialist in september, but what shoud we do in the mean time? I don't know if I should let him continue with gymnastics, he does 6-7 hours a week and I am affraid it is too much pressure on the spine. They did not tell me yet if it is congenital or idiopatic, they just wrote the diagnostic on the paper and recommended to the to a specialist. I am planning to make an appointment with a chiropractor, do you think it's a good ideea? Thank you again.

        Hi Kalarasy

I don't mean to say this harshly (my big apologies if it does) but No to seeing the Chiropractor (at the very least wait until after you've seen the specialist) if you type Chiropractor into the Spinekids forum (and into this forum too)

http://www.spinekids.com/boards; and read some of the kids experiences from having been put through the chiropractic path, you'll understand where I am coming from.

I know, that Chiropractors, do have their place in the medical world, not with scoliosis, especially with a young spine involved. I know some chiropractor's claim they can help or 'fix scoliosis' but the claims have poor evidential back up, and I've read of so much heartache of people being down the chiropractic road with their children, I know I wouldn't take the risk if it was my child.

What to do in the meantime...........I, my gut says, if your son loves gymnastics, let him continue it.....I can't see any reason to stop it. It is something he enjoys doing and is keeping his muscles in his spine and back nice and strong. Yes Gymnastics is 'hard work' on the body generally (what i've been told, was never able to do it myself 'cause of the brace) but the benefits of it for balance, strength, agility etc are absolutely enormous.

        Regards

        Alison

I suggest you definitely encourage sports, and if gymnastics is the desired sport, go for it. My daughter has handled the brace and surgery. Her recovery from surgery is going great, and I believe it is very much due to her active lifelstyle with sports. She plays basketball and soccer, as well as enjoying wall climbing and has dabbled with gymnastics. Kris

            Another Gym Mommie

So good to hear from another Gymnastics Mommie! My daughter is five and has been taking gymnastics for about 2.5 years. She loves it. She is only taking 1 hour a week, so we allowed her to add dance for another hour. Our pediatrician told us not to limit her activities. We don't have an appt. with the specialist until Sept. 26. But...according to all the research, it looks like any type of exercise that strengthens the "core" muscles is good for individuals who have scoliosis.

My daughter has a 30 degree curve, so we are praying that she will not need intervention, but if she does, we will do whatever we have to and try to still allow her in the gym :-). Best of luck! Hope to hear from you again!

as long as the gymnastics doesn't give him any pain, then he should be fine carrying on with it. But you should definately see someone as song as possible to find out more about his scoliosis and the possibilities of progression of the curve. I have scoliosis and i don't see a chiropracter or anyone like that, becasuse they don't know enough about scoliosis or speacialise in it, also i don't think that scoliosis is the kind of thing that needs a chripracter, just check ups to monitor the progression by a specialist.

                Another Gymnastics Mom

I too am a gymnastic mommy. My daughter is 9 and has been involved in gymnastics since 3. She is currently in her second year as a competitive gymnast. She practices 6+ hours a week and loves it. This summer consisted of fairly intense conditioning. My little tyke is very muscular and flexible. I also notice a more pronounce arch in her lower spine right above her buttocks. She is currently under the care of a pediatric othorpedist (sp). She is due to for xrays and checkup next week. I am concern we will have to pull the plug on her gymnastics. We will find out next week.

                  My Daughter

My 8 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Scoliosis with a curve of 21 and 16 degrees, actually we just saw the specialist last night. She has to go get fitted for a brace next week, the doctor want's her to wear it 23 hours a day since she's so young and has a lot growing left. She's also very active in cheerleading which she will continue to do. I say ask the doctor if the gymnastics will be a problem and take it from there. This is hard on parents, but just think how hard it is for these little people just trying to grow up. It hasn't really hit my daughter yet, but i'm sure it will once she sees and have to wear it. I'm praying for the best for her and for the best for you all and your kids.
