  • Help with Yoga

To those of you who have started Yoga with your Scoliosis...
I have a moderately severe curvature (thorasic of 64 degrees and compensating curves below and above)...
However, I have not yet chosen to have surgery because my appearance is not highly affected at all and my pain is only moderate. My recent visit to a specialist (after ignoring my condition for 5 years) showed me that my curvature is progressing, but very slowly...due to this and the other factors, I decided to simply monitor my condition over the next two years. My doctor recommended that I start an exercise program to help with my pain. I want to do Yoga! The doctor OK'ed this and gave me a specific "perscription" for the types of exercises he'd like for me to do...
Now my question is this; did you all seek out a special Yoga instructor to work with you because of your scoliosis? or do you just attend classes with others and participate as if you had no "special circumstances"?
I am wondering if I should sign up for a regular class because of my condition and being afraid of possibly getting negative results if I do not do the Yoga properly. Because of my severe scoliosis, does my case need to be special? Do you think I should seek out a proffesional who's knowledgable in Scoliosis before going into Yoga?
    Advice appreciated!

Is there any Yoga for patients that have spinal fusions, or is all the Yoga for patients who have not yet had surgery?

        Hi Gail...

I know that Elise Browning Miller (the author of Yoga for Scoliosis) has patients who have scoliosis fusions. I don't, however, know if she addresses fusions in her video.

        Regards,
        Linda

          yoga for spinal fusions

Hello Gail, Ellen Kiley is a post surgical yoga therapist. Her website is ScoliYogi.com. I think she's actually on the Board of the National Scoliosis Foundation, and she's had extensive spinal fusion surgery. I've heard really good things about her. She was just written up in a national yoga magazine, I think it was International Yoga. Does anyone know? I read the article, good article.

And Hann 521, on the Yoga for Scoliosis tape, they use four "models," with four different curves. My daugther uses the tape, and before we started the tape, we knew her particular curve(s), and followed along with the "model" who had her curve. Pat
