  • Looking for a Portland, Oregon area surgeon

    Hi all,

I have been researching scoliosis for quite some time and have found reading these forums very helpful, but this is actually the first time I have posted. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was about 14 years old, and I am now 25, and I have noticed that in the past few years the curve has worsened considerably and I beginning to have more and more pain these days just standing or sitting in certain positions.

What I am wondering is if anybody knows of any good surgeons in the Portland, Oregon area. I have been to my primary physician and have had some x-rays taken, and she has suggested that I go and see a spine specialist about my condition. I have an appointment with Dr. Keenan, who she highly recommends, but unfortunately I cannot see Dr. Keenan until the end of September. I was just thinking that I would like to see another doctor in addition to Keenan for a few reasons: 1) Get a 2nd opinion and 2) Get an opinion a little sooner.

If anybody has any personal experience with Dr. Keenan or any other surgeon in Oregon, I would really love to hear about it. Thanks everyone for all the information about scoliosis, surgery and recovery - I have really learned a lot here and hope that one day I can help answer some questions with first-hand experience

    Hi Trevor...

I think that long waits are the norm for good scoliosis specialists, so I'm not sure I'd encourage you to try to find someone who can see you quickly. You can find a list of specialists here:

    Best of luck.

    Regards,
    Linda

Thanks a bunch for that link, Linda! I will definitely look through that and see if I can find some other surgeons in the area to speak with.

I was able to find a doctor at OHSU by the name of Jung U. Yoo, MD. Has anyone heard of him or have any experience seeing him? He will be available a little sooner, so I am going to go and speak with him about my curve and see what he has to say about it.

Here is a link to his page on OHSU's site:

        Hi Trevor...

It doesn't appear that he's done much (if anything) in terms of spinal deformity, so be sure you get a second opinion before agreeing to any treatment.

        Linda

Hello Trevor, my name is Christine and i am 20 year old who had herrington rods placed in may of 2000 when i was 15 years old.
I currently live in the Portland Metro Area and my surgery was performed by a Dr. Renwick through Kaiser Permanente. He is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in scoliosis, and performed my surgery at Doernbecker's Hospital. I don't know if you have Kaiser insurance, but i believe he did very well on my back, and the problems i experience today are because of the intenisive case of scoliosis i had, not because his performance was anything short of perfection. i hope that helps.

          -Christine.
