  • Scoliosis & foot orthotics

My grandson (14) has been braced for his 39% scoliosis. I was having foot orthotics made for my self and the orthotist? said he has helped many scoliosis patients with foot orthotics.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

My son wears an orthotic for a foot deformity since age 9. He subsequently developed scoliosis and kyphosis. Neither related to the foot deformity or to the orthotic. Nor does the orthotic "help" the curvatures.

I wore both a back brace and foot orthotics for years (about 9-14y/o). The foot orthotics was for my Charcot Marie Tooth. Not all, but many people with Scoliosis/Kyphosis also have CMT. Your orthopedist was probably talking about those people he had helped with both disorders.

26 years old. Diagnosed with severe Scoliosis/Kyphosis and CMT at the age of 8. Have had a total of 6 surgeries, 4 on my spine and 2 on both of my feet. Including rod removal surgery. I am fused from T-2 to T-12.

I've worn orthotics since I was old enough to wear shoes (which was also when I started wearing a spinal brace) and still wear them today and probably always will. The decision for me to wear orthotics was from having very flat feet and hips, knees and feet that rolled inwards rather badly. The orthotics weren't to help the scoliosis but to try and get a better aligment of my hips, knees and feet to give them some relief.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis because I went to the chiropractor with foot problems. He found it during a "routine" check.

I have very flat feet and I found that having orthotics greatly reduces a lot of my lower back pain. I doubt there was a connection between my feet and scoliosis but my body appeared pretty straight (hips & shoulders were aligned almost perfectly) after I wore my orthotics for a few years and up until recently no one knew I had scoliosis unless I told them.
          Age 28
          diagnosed at age 12
wore a boston brace until age 14
No surgery, was on "wait and watch" till recently. Got a SpineCor (Jan 27th) to help ease the pain.
T-curve 73 degrees with severe rotation (curves to the right)
L-curve 45 degrees with slightly less severe rotation than my T-curve (curves to the left)

The docs I have been seeing for the last six months, chronic pain specialists, told me it would be a very good idea that I wear orthotics. This was because I had flat feet and, he said, my scoliosis was probably caused by the fact that one of my legs was shorter than the other. (Ordered x-rays measuring leg length showed this earlier this year ) I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age thirteen. I am now sixteen and haven't had any operations. Having worn these orthotics for around a couple months now, I would say they help - but not much ... yet. At the least they make your shoes more comfortable.

              Some sort of connection

              Hey everyone.
Ever since I have been a member here since early 2004, I have noticed people talking about having flat feet and Scoliosis. When I was 13, I was diagnosed with severe pes planu or flat feet. I had to have 5 reconstructive surgeries for the flat footedness. Then, I was diagnosed with Scoliosis. There has to be some sort of connection. Has to be. Well, please tell me what you think. Talk to you all so soon! Ross

                ADFW,
Sorry to put a monkey wrench in here, but I have never had flat feet and in fact just the opposite. My arches are so high that I'm just one degree off of "adnormal"

I wear orthotics to support my feet and ankles (which turn out very badly because of my arches). Both my ortho and my ped doc say there is no connection

There are lots of anectdotal reports about flat feet and scoliosis. High arched feet are a feature of Charcot Marie Tooth Syndrome which is also related to spinal curves. So foot arches are at times related to spinal curves.

That makes you wonder if there is something else that may be related to BOTH foot problems, and scoliosis that would end the term "idiopathic" scoliosis.

I wish I would have started off wearing orthotics. Because of my severe flat feet, I had to have 5 reconstructive surgeries. After surgery, though, I did wear orthotics for about a year. There has to be some kind of connection between the two.

My son, who just recently had a posterior fusion, has really flat feet. I have always felt there might be a connection between the two. A chiropractor friend had fitted him for orthotics and he wore them for about a year. It may have helped some as far as evening out his hips. He got muscle pain in the left hip area before surgery and even now after surgery the pain has gotten somewhat worse. I'm thinking giving orthotics a try, maybe it will help with the hip pain??

                          Bunions and Scoliosis

I had severe bunions on both feet and had the surgery as the pain was constant. My daughter, who has scoliosis but under control, has painful bunions as well and will have them taken care of in the future. My podiatrist said it is not uncommon to see people with scoliosis to have bunions. There may be some truth to it as my sisters have neither scoliosis or feet problems. We both have orthotics. Just food for thought.....

                            Bunions

Hi, my name is Tori I have a 22 degree curve and wear a Boston Brace. Has anyone had bunion surgery? If you have is it painful? How long does it to recover? Do you have to stay in the hospital? I have scoliosis and bunions and i am going to have to have bunion surgery. I was just wondering what to expect.
                            Thank You
