Nancy, I am a little lost with who is doing what. You have a local neurologist that has looked at your neck? What does the radiologist say in the reports about your neck?

Did this neurologist say he wanted to do surgery on the neck? What did Dr G say about your neck?

    This sounds painful....

Yes very painful—Had MRI of full spine 3/19. Findings: Grade 1 Retrolisthesis (Posterior Displacement of 1 Vertabra to a degree less than Luxation Dislocated). C3-4, C4/5, C5/6 Grade I Severity; 3/4-Dislocation (Luxatin-dislocation). C3/4-Disosteophyte Complex Formation, Moderate Canal Stenosis, Foraminal Stenosis (worse on L); C-4/5 Disc Osteophyte Complex Formation, Moderate-Severe Canal Stenosis,Mild-Moderate Foraminal Narrowing (worse on R); C5/6- Disc Osteophyte Complex Formation, Mild Foraminal Narrowing, Moderate Canal Stenosis; C6/7- Sm Disc Osteophyte Complex Formation, Mild Foraminal Narrowing, Minimual Canal Narrowing— Subtle increase T-2 signal w/in cord also partially visualized Pons— I had severe headaches earlier this year, now the pain from neck radiating down shoulder, arm has gone from last week but have continued to experience tingling in L foot which has increased. I am very worried that my spine is deteriorating rapidly. Have appt w/physical/rehab doc 9/16 for pain relief. I have a very good neurologist who told me in May that I had 1-1 1/2 yrs to have surgery before cervical problem affects my brain. He told me Dr Gupta could do this.

Nancy, You have it going on...

The reason why I asked is because we have never seen anyone do a full fusion with cervical fusion in one series of surgeries. (Unless Linda knows) Either you do the spine first, or the neck first, its just way too much surgery. I guess Dr Gupta will have to make that call on what comes first. You have moderate "severe" C4/5 canal stenosis (narrowing) which is standing out in that report. Just about all of us senior scoliosis patients have spinal cord stenosis on multiple levels, in the neck it interferes with cerebrospinal fliud flow in our spinal cords running up to the brain. I highly suspect this is why I am having these occasional cervico related headaches and dizziness and started after my cervical herniation diagnosis 6 years ago. This of course is separate from all the arm and hand tingling and numbness we can have. If we didn't have arms, that wouldn't matter so you can see why the spinal cord canal stenosis is important. I hope this is making sense as the spinal cord takes priority. Its pain vs CNS function. Push on the spinal cord with a herniation, twist it, or kink it, and you have problems.

Have you done traction? They have these neat simple neck traction devices you could try. The inflatable ones are only $10. Of course you should ask your doctor. I have had traction work for pain, and also and have not had it work. Why this happens, I don't know, but its worth a try....Google cervical neck pillows and cervical traction. You will see all sorts of products....

Looking down is bad when you have neck problems. I am guilty from sitting at my desk and writing over many years. Looking up is much better. We are going to have to start up a stargazing neck club so we can look up all night long.

I had insomnia the other night and was up all night due to my neck. Eventually, you get so exhausted you do fall asleep at some point. I don't take any med's because I want to feel what is going on with my body without any chemical alterations or interactions. If I take a medication, I do like to have a result in an acceptable amount of time, not forever because of the resistance that gets built up. For surgeries, its different, and for pain cases like yourself it makes it so much harder to function.

Some of the Spondylolisthesis cases in the lumbar are incredible. When the vertebrae slide off or displace, its hard for me to even imagine what that feels like. They use a 1-4 classification for severity.....Retro is back and spondy is in any direction, usually forward. Some of us have this happen, some do not.

I had a bad spondy happen at T12 from a bad ski crash many years ago, saw it on x-ray, and my Chiropractors managed to get it to return. I was in my early 30's so it was not caused by degeneration.

When I would visit my Chiropractor (after fusion) for my un-fused neck years ago, I would ask "Since I only have one level left, do I get the discount?" They didn't laugh, I though it was hilarious. (Smiley face) They call me the heavy hitter.....You have to joke about this stuff....its the only way.
