  • Just last 10 years

Hello everyone. In December I had my 10 year anniversary for my first scoliosis surgery. I have had many since. However the original surgery is doing well. I think I would have been more excited about this mile stone if I hadn't had the car accident in September. I am now 8 weeks out after the second fusion surgery for a broken neck. It seems to be doing okay. Now I am fused in the cervical both front and back.
Once they placed the fusion in the posterior, I can hear it click when I move. Really strange. It is challenging to get used to the new norm.
    Happy New Year

Congratulations on 10 years Jackie, even though its been a tough battle for you.

Did the shoulder issues get resolved? That was a rare event you had happen....

Did you say you were fused C2 down into the thoracic? I cant remember.

The shoulder issues improved when they did a muscle transfer to the shoulder blade. They used a donor tendon. I think this accident stretched it as my shoulder dropped again. I haven't had the time to have it checked. I just got permission to drive.
I am fused in the cervical c4-7. With this accident, the neurosurgeon fused inn the posterior c4-t2.he connected to what I had. At first it was on!y on the left side but I pulled the rod apart in rehab. Now he redid it to both sides and added an extra thoracic level.
      A long ordeal for sure.

Ok, so C4-Pelvis now. You were T2-Pelvis. That is 5 levels up higher into the neck.

Do you think your loss of mobility in the lower neck is an issue? Can you describe the change? Also, is positioning pillows in bed any problem? I know if you don't get this pillow position just right, there can be hell to pay the next day. I ask because my neck is also precarious these days.

I cant believe the shoulder drop....that was such a battle for you years ago. Sigh....

          Hi Ed,
Yes this is a change. I am able to turn side to side. I don't think as much as before but I'm still not allowed to stretch it. Also no PT to help stretch the fight muscles. I am in PT, but for my hand use.
I am released to leave the brace off to sleep but I haven't did that yet. I use mostly a flatter pillow right now. In the hospital i refused to use any pillow. It just felt better that way.
I am also released to drive but it is really hard to do that yet. I had to get a new car and chose one with all the sensors on it. Right now it has only 300 miles on it. I am still very afraid at times in the car.I do know that I PTSD. I just have to take baby steps.
There are physical, emotional as well as legal and financial problems to an accident like this. Time and only time will help.
          Thanks for your concern.

Jackie, congratulations on your 10th anniversary... although the years after your initial surgery have not been kind to you.
Especially the car accident you were in.
Being fused from top to bottom must be a challenge I can not even imagine! I am surprised they are letting you drive.
Jackie wishing you all the best and hoping for a better next 10 years for you. 💗
