I watched most of those videos.

The chiros are selling her nutritional supplements. There is no evidence those are helpful unless there is a diagnosed deficiency. Chiros don't work in the world of evidence.

Several years ago, Morningstar developed a "Tornado Suit" and sold it for big bucks. Apparently it didn't work and he made another suit. There is no evidence that the tornado suit helps or that this activity suit helps. You are paying through the nose for them to gather data on an unproven (and in the case of the tornado suit disproven) treatment. They should be paying you. Insult to injury.

It takes over for muscle and so the muscle weakens from disuse and she will be worse when she stops wearing the suit. This is true of all scoliosis-related bracing.

Also you should consider if she is a paid shill.
The scoliosis suit is not a rigid brace. Doesn't scoliosis weaken some of our muscles? The straps must provide resistance to strengthen the weak muscles. I could join a gym but I don't believe they have a weight machine designed for scoliosis patients.

It doesn't have to be rigid. It restricts your movement in many places and planes. Any initial relief you get will be due to the suit aligning you spine to avoid nerve impingement presumably. That is alignment your muscles aren't providing and your muscles will have even less ability to help align your spine the more time you are relying on the suit.

Ask yourself why the same guy who invented the Tornado Suit and made the same claims he is now about the Activity Suit stopped touting the Tornado Suit. A few years from now he will make another suit. It is all hype and marketing and no evidence.

They have no evidence this suit works for anything long term and you are paying for them to experiment on you. They should pay you to wear the suit.

We had a PhD researcher here several years ago whose field was muscle physiology. He did research on torso rotation for scoliosis. Anyway he confirmed that all braces for scoliosis, hard or soft, if they restrict motion will contribute to weakening muscles. Unless you wear the suit the rest of your life, it is self-defeating.

Doesn't scoliosis contribute to weakening muscles? Doesn't every fusion restrict motion?

I inquired about fitting center locations (closest one to me is in NYC) and was directed to another scoliosis group on Facebook.

I think it restricts ROM so some muscles weaken.

Yes but your spine stays straight no matter how weak your muscles get. Furthermore, there is no chance of DDD in the fused area despite the fact that everyone else, scoliosis or no, WILL get DDD. It's like death and taxes. :-)

Those are the same chiros who keep changing their name. Ask yourself why they do that.

Chiros and lay people. The blind leading the blind. Chiros ARE lay people when it comes to treating scoliosis. Only orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists (i.e., ONLY MDs) are qualified to treat scoliosis with conservative treatments.

There is a strained side and a weak side.

    http://www.scoliosissos.com/news/pos...osis-weak-side

I've seen a physiatrist at a major Boston hospital and was prescribed a gym program; his next step would be injections. I'm not bad enough for surgery but good enough for lifelong muscle imbalance. How do the weight machines at the gym address the muscle imbalance? The machines are designed for symmetrical people . Let me strain my strained side even more. The suit appears to address the muscle imbalance better than a gym machine.

Your muscles that are constrained from movement in the suit will weaken for the same reason the weak side of the curve is weak... dis-use.

By the way this group (ScoliosisSOS) is an offshoot of Weiss's Schroth method which he has since abandoned. Weiss is a trained orthopedic doctor.

How can a suit that restricts muscle movement ever help? Muscle can't be strengthened if it isn't worked. The suit decreases your chance of moving those muscles.

The suit can probably help stretch muscles on the concave side of the curve but it can't work them.

I wanted to be sure everyone understands that, by "this", Pooka1 means Scolismart et. al., and not the National Scoliosis Foundation.

Linda thank you for clarifying that! I edited my post to make it clear.

By the way, I think Scolismart is the latest incantation of the chiro group that keeps inventing expensive treatments that they get people to pay for that never seem to pan out. ScoliosSOS I believe is the group that is pushing Schroth methods, the same methods that has been abandoned by the developer's grandson Weiss, an orthopedic surgeon. I am not sure whether they are PTs or chiros or both.

Yes, I think they keep reinventing themselves for whatever nefarious reasons.

I suspect enough people try the treatment and are not helped and word gets out so they change the name and tweak the treatment like they abandoned the Tornado Suit and now are pushing the Activity Suit. If the tornado suit worked why move away from it to another suit? I predict they will stop touting the activity suit at some point and start touting the next amateur night thing.

None of these products have evidence of efficacy in the long term and meanwhile they are taking the money of desperate people. Chiros are not trained to treat scoliosis and it shows.

    Braced Life You Tube

These videos are made with actors, not the actual patients.

Multiple examples of orthopedic casting, and some Milwaukee videos.

This will bring back memories for some of us.

The old school full hard braces are just barbaric..... I posted the Braced life You tube page to show what others have to deal with. The full body casts are incredible....hard to believe that someone can endure having 90% of the body and head in a cast.

In the one video, a 12 yr old gets set up with a Milwaukee, and the next day her mom has her brace in her hand wondering why her daughter doesn't want to wear the brace. This video really stunned me....
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8TjQfSuByI

With any scoliosis bracing, hard or soft, you either have to push or pull....and none of this is pleasant and braces have to be worn almost all the the time to work. I would guess that soft braces are "slightly" barbaric.

The scoliosis surgeons all know this....None of the decisions that have to do with scoliosis are ever easy.

Its so difficult when we know that in 50-100 years, there will be a cure with gene editing. A long time, a lot of hard work, but really just right around the corner. We wont see it happen in our lifetimes....Have an injection and wait 5 years and your spine straightens up. We can only dream right now...
