    STEM CELLS......January 2018

The subject of stem cells is a hot topic these days so its probably about time for a thread...

I did contact a stem cell advocate in the Los Angeles area a few years back looking for information on the subject. You have to admit, it does sound exciting.

After a few days, I had a reply and they asked me "What are you waiting for?" This coming from an over aggressive marketing type sales person, it reminded me of shopping for cars.....Of course things came to a screeching halt.

There are a couple of things that I want to mention first....

    1) The shots cost roughly $10,000 and there is no guarantee. If you are Mel Gibson and have that heavenly bank account, I guess your golden.

    Should I continue?

    2) I want to see studies and proof (Could use some help) And not just for spine, I will take anything....
    3) Are stem cells FDA approved? Any therapies at all?
    4) Not covered by any insurance
    5) Now, everyone and their brother offers these shots....Is everyone qualified now? This is a good question.
    6) Anytime you make an incision, or do an injection, there is the possibility of infection....

Here are a few links below, after minimal time searching...

To see if its of any benefit for us......for spinal discs

It seems that there has been quite a bit of activity in this area over the last few years.

Ed, I will try to read thru the material you posted at some point but I can tell you that stem cell therapy is used in horses. I don't know if it works but it is used.

Here's a some material from UC Davis vet school from 2010. I assume the field has advanced some since then.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?
    Answer: Medicine

Thanks Sharon, That would be greatly appreciated!

Linda, before I forget, and I am doing that often lately, for the healing of bone, I wonder if surgeons have entertained using stem cells to promote healing in fusion during our surgeries?

If someone is rejected for surgery, or on along wait list, would stem cells be an alternative? (For pain?)

I have to go down to work and try to get something done today....still battling the Andromeda strain.

Stem cells aren't really magic. You can't (at least not yet) inject them and expect a problem (whatever it is) to be solved. At the moment, stem cells are used in some biologics used to aid fusion. As far as I know, there is no verified research showing that stem cell biologics outperform non-stem cell biologics. And, I'm fairly certain that insurance companies balk at paying the hefty price tag.

Here's a no nonsense article on stem cells: https://www.spine-health.com/blog/ar...ower-back-pain

Thanks for the link Linda, that was brutally honest.

Ok, so for our needs with (spine), it looks like this wraps it up for now.....Again, we can only hope that the science will progress at a faster pace without risking safety...

We all want some medical magic to happen.....perhaps in the near future.

If there is anyone reading this that has done stem cell "spine injections", please post your testimonial.
