  • Anyone having hip problems

    Hi all:

I was just wondering if any other post surgical scoliosis friend has had any hip issues. The last few years I have been increasing having groin pain. Both legs, not at same time. Currently, it is most days, with very very little walking. I had a five year visit with this time Dr. Gupta, who took Dr. Lenke's patients in St. Louis. The fellow that I spoke with first told me it looks like I have bad arthritis in both hips and I might need a hip replacement. Dr. Gupta just told me I need PT. Then, the next day I saw my radiologist report of my xray and it said the following: ..."Patchy sclerosis involving the femoral heads. ...may also represent developing osteonecrosis."

If anyone is having groin/hip issues & pain can you recommend any doctor or treatment. I am having to use my walker because of the pain. It also wakes me up at night.

    I've had scoliosis since age 6 with two surgeries. 1969 & 2006. I am fused T3-sacrum.

    Appreciated any recommendations. Thanks! Karen

Kathy, You mean drivetrain issues? I refer to the hips, knees, and feet as drivetrain......You get your back fixed, and then the drivetrain takes a dump. You know, just like a car, its always something! Its a good thing we don't have engine lights because they would be lit. "What color is your engine light, Yellow or Red?" "Mine was blinking a few years back, and had to have that fixed"

Necrosis is a dirty word you know? We don't even want to talk about that! But motion, moving, and walking will help with cell death. Its all about the blood and moving it around. (And eating tons of blueberries!)

Things start with therapy, self or otherwise. It seems we start with some sort of physical therapy program when we are young, which starts quite a bit before any surgery, and then a half a century goes by . We get fused, some more time goes by and then we start the process all over again......The 50 year cycle of living with scoliosis. All we want to do is stay out of the repair shop....

It takes a certain amount of determination to move forward.....the determination to succeed participating in an alternative program as a teen, the determination to succeed after having your whole spine fused, or even the determination to put one foot in front of the other as we age. It seems like it gets harder as we age, and after what we went through with the surgeries and all, one foot in front of the other might seem like an easy thing to anyone else, but what do they know? They don't know....Sometimes I yelp from pain jabs and stabs, people ask what wrong, and I simply tell them I make a lot of noise. Its the easiest answer.

My philosophy might have been that when the tire goes flat, to simply drive that sucker on the rim and add more gas by stepping on the pedal. I guess I might have done that by waiting so long for my surgeries, but now I think its a good way to think ageing with scoliosis...We can handle the pain as long as the engine light isn't blinking.

One foot in front of the other.

    Add more gas.

      Ed:

You must be a writer. Your analogy is spot on and entertaining at the same time.

I guess you're telling me I must keep up with the PT. (I will try the blueberries). The PT is always a young person used to having sports injured clients. Very rarely do I get one that even knows what scoliosis is and I always bring a copy of an xray to show my hardware.

I'll do my best. My sweet husband does so much, I feel bad. It gets very hard at times. My engine light is blinking every day.

Nice talking with you. BTW, my name is Karen. (From St, Louis) Code name: Daily Pain (lol) PS: You gave me a smile. Thanks!

        Karen,
I'v notice this time that my hips are really sore when I walk. I haven't had the pain and pressure there before. Hope it goes away. You are certainly one tough lady. Although I know the struggle gets very trying and depression is a huge part of this if not kept in check. I hope you find a good surgeon. Its a lot for you to think about!! If you have to use a walker things are not good. Best wishes to you!! Warmly, Linda

Thanks, Linda! Good luck with your issues too. Not that I want anyone else in pain but it sometimes helps to talk to people that really understand scoliosis and everything that goes with it. Plus pulmonary issues that I haven't mentioned yet.

          Take care,

Hi Karen, I'm glad it's not necrosis, but osteoarthritis can cause pain too can't it? Although the said it's mild. So is it that the S1 joints radiating over to the hips, or could it be the iliac screws causing the pain? I'm feeling my iliac screws, as I'v lost quite a bit of weight, and the are close to the hip joints. Whatever, it's too bad you have to suffer with this. I have a cane I use most the time because of my left leg, knee and foot issues. I need surgery on my foot real bad , but have had so many surgeries, I am wore out, but I can't hardly put a shoe on my left foot. Sorry about my venting on your thread!!! I can relate to what you are feeling. Although when I look around I know I'm fortunate to be able to walk at all. I know that doesn't make a person feel any better if you're hurting!!!! Sending warm vibes to you, Linda
