  • do magec rods fuse the spine?

If they don't , they could be removed once growth is done, right?
my undesrtanding is that the spine is not fused, that's why they do distractions over time without the need of an invasive surgery. Am I right?

All growth rod treatments, whether magnetic or traditional, are followed by a fusion as far as I know. There was a crazy thread in the past where a few people were completely confused about this issue.

Now whether the reason for the fusion is due to only kids with very large curves getting the rods in the first place or whether it is due to auto-fusion which is a problem with traditional rods as far as I know but I don't know if it is a problem with magnetic rods.

A father posted on here a while ago about his son't magnetic rod treatment and he did say his son would be fused after that.

It was "Anthony's Dad" (For those that want to search the member list) It was around 4 year ago.
        http://www.srs.org/patients-and-fami...tories/anthony

The Magec system reduces the multiple surgeries of growing rods.....Some of these early onset kids have a lot of surgeries,(through scar tissue) along with the radiation exposure that CT and O Arm flouroscopy offers....Also, less anesthesia is required due to less surgeries.

It seems logical that they would finally end up being fused at some point. I don't think its happened yet since Anthony was one of the first, and its only been 4 years.

It's a good idea....(tears) Its hard for me to post about really young scoli kids with early onset scoliosis without getting emotional.

This blog enables families to share their journeys, their challenges, and their successes dealing with early-onset scoliosis.

Here is a story about Anthony from about 15 months ago.

          http://www.heraldonline.com/living/article60418651.html

I am very sorry to read his rods have broken more than once. But I am very upset that some other child beat him up. This is beyond unfair. I am speechless.

What a wonderful child he is.

Thanks for posting Sharon.....Anthony actually was the 1st Magec patient, I forgot since his dad stopped posting and there has been little chatter lately on the Magec system

After my surgeries, I was so delicate that my comfort zone around others was around 5 feet. One little bump let alone getting beat up in school was frightening. That's what the ski poles are for, for wacking them in the shin when they get too close. (smiley face)

If I had a scoli kid in school, I would INSIST that I speak to all the teachers and students in the auditorium about scoliosis and spine surgery before my kid was admitted. I don't think that's asking too much, and it would be a learning session. Stay 5 feet away from my child. Boys that age can be rambunctious.....especially around others at school. Since he wasn't fused, the breaking of the rod or rods probably didn't take much effort since that system is anchored only at the top and bottom leaving everything in the middle untouched. Being bionic doesn't mean having extraordinary powers, or strength. I could imagine some boy who thought, "He is bionic, lets see how tough his back is" Boys will be boys and kids can be mean (smug face)

In looking at his x-rays once again, he had a 75 thoracic Cobb at age 8. He needed surgery and something had to be done, it was the best choice.

On a lighter note, did you check out my Rolls Royce hot tub post? That one was probably one of my funniest here at NSF. (linda's thread)

Okay I went looking for that. Oh. my. gosh. That's pretty funny that you found that searching for rolls royce bath tub or close to that. LOL

If NSF was a ship, you would be the cruise director, Ed. :-)

On Jeopardy, it would be a daily double question under the category "scoliosis"

Alex Trebek: Answer, The most comfortable water physiotherapy for scoliosis patient recovery

Ed: Question: What is a Rolls Royce in a swimming pool

Alex Trebek: Rolls Royce in a swimming pool, yes indeed.

(At least we have something definite in the scoliosis world, might as well be this)
