  • MRI and Emergency Room

Just left ER and got 2 shots and more discouragement. The Dr said no one in BR would help me and that I should go to Baylor in Houston as soon as possible as I'm losing muscle strength now in leg and it's getting worse.

My New York appt is end of February for consultation but I don't know if I can wait as my nerve stuff has gotten worse. I'm Hoping to get an MRI and email to a few Dr's and see if one of these scoliosis Dr's can see me soon.

I am scheduled to see another Ortho Dr. Monday here locally and all I need from him is to get this MRI.

Meantime I'm gonna stay on anxiety meds to help!

Obviously I am not an expert on Scoliosis but if someone here who knows more with nerve damage and scoliosis, can I contact you to communicate?

I am in the process of getting more test done here locally so that I may take them or email them with the scoliosis specialist that can hopefully help me. I'm calling the specialist after my appt on Monday to see if I can get in sooner. I wish I had done all this sooner but this is it and I e got to focus on getting help and answers.

    I really appreciate it.

Melisse, your trip to ER brought back memories...I went through those battles years ago, ready to check into the emergency room and demand to be knocked out for a break. This of course never happened (for my scoliosis) but many of us here know how this feels.

I don’t know if there is a “scoliosis” surgeon in BR, but I would NOT let anyone else operate on my spine. Scoliosis surgeons are the only ones trained to “balance” our spines which is important.

For nerve pain, I did many hot water soaks, and massages.....NSAID’s also work well for pain....Celebrex, Diclofenac....You can get these through your GP.

        Ed,

I was at my wits end yesterday filled with fear and anxiety. I'm not in a ton of pain but realize my right leg is getting worse.

I've already had a neurosurgeon refuse to see me the other day while waiting in his exam room. My fears seriously went into overdrive realizing my back is severely complicated and learning from him and the ER dr. That no one will touch me here in Louisiana.

I'm great full for this site and for the compassionate people who have given me advise, you, Linda, Sharon, Jackie, misty.

Like I said I hope to get my MRI soon so that I can take to Baylor and New York drs that I have appointments with.

I am a strong woman but all this needed research and education and rejection is overwhelming but it's my life and spine and I'm not a quitter.

Ed, by the way on a lighter note.

I could probably sit down with you in real life and exchange snow related injuries. I outlived an avalanche in BC back in 2003, and outlived a snowmobile wreck in 2001 that left me with a compression fracture in my spine.

I formerly lived in Montana and saw first hand just how amazing but also dangerous those rockys can be.

Many members here have mastered their fears and anxiety concerning scoliosis.....this comes after experience, and knowing what to expect. Learning to breathe and understanding that change can be hard, accepting change, and of course pulling the old boot straps up is something we get pretty good at. Extreme pain events are true tests that we overcome and we do heal. I like to repeat this thought, even if it is hard at times, but we actually do heal. It’s a concept of intention. The intent to prevail means that it has to be more powerful than everything else. Utilize powerful healing thoughts....

I almost drowned swimming in a lake many years ago. I was way out there coming back and was waving to a lifeguard who was preoccupied with the usual beach action. If he would have saved me, he would have scored, Ha ha but that didn’t happen and I had to think about my situation. Since anxiety and panic set in, I realized that I was actually trained to survival float. Of course that worked, and saved the day. Scoliosis is similar in that we learn our bodies and utilize our own methods of self recovery. Hot soaks are good, ALONE, not talking to others, in that we transfer our minds and relax....I found this to be quite helpful. Our first choice should be to simply lay down and do a time out.

I had way more anxiety ski jumping as a kid...standing above cliffs knowing that it could be a disaster waiting to happen. I learned to relax and transfer thoughts.....This is why I like to post jokes once in a while, comedy takes our minds off pain and anxiety.

You do need to see a scoliosis surgeon somewhere.....Be careful with MRI co-pays, they can really be a shocker. If no-body has ordered your MRI, don’t dictate your own diagnostics, they can be expensive mistakes. X-rays should be cheap, MRI’s require laying in expensive machinery which they charge accordingly. CT’s usually only for emergency use....

            When did you leave Montana?

I made it to age 58 today.

I wish you a happy birthday! 58 is young and It sounds like your life has been full and rich from experiences and moments.

Thank you for sharing your experience with some of the fears that us scoliosis folks share and learning to handle them. This has been a real big eye opener for me but today I am calm. I'm headed back to work tomorrow and will do my normal life. I have never been to the ER like that, looking back it was comical. The ER dr knew me from our local gym and I'm on the table as he's talking to me, like yeah I know you I told him my story and i did say I am not that girl who's ever taken anything for anxiety or depression but yes, I'd love some pills for that. I guess we all have our own right to have a mini breakdown although I was completely in charge of mine and walked out of there with a sore butt from the shots.

I did get the medrol dose pack and a little stash of anxiety pills for when I need them.

I lived in Montana for 10 years from 1996-2006. It is my second home and I still go back every summer and am able to work remote. It was a different life and thankfully no longer with my first husband who is an adrenaline snowmobile movie producer. He still chases that up there but not me, I'm in Louisiana now with no chance of avalanches I couldn't do any of that anymore if I wanted but I can certainly walk upright and that is great with me.

I did see some beautiful skies before though and was above the clouds on some of those peaks, coolest feeling ever up there. It truly is Gods Country.

Thanks for the birthday wishes guys...

Melisse, You got a Medrol pack from the ER room doc? Remember to take all the doses all the way through per the instructions.....

Yes, I have done a few things.....never letting scoliosis get in the way when I was younger, that’s for sure.
