Well we do have a plan, I am not sure if it is the only opinion but it is a plan. First of all, the university specialist said that PT wasn't the answer right now. It will not help. He feels that the Serratus a muscle got weakened during surgery. I think he means the scapulectomy surgery. It will not hold the scapula to the ribs. Thus allowing the winging and the dysfunction of the shoulder. It makes may motions impossible.
So it is another surgery. First to check if that is the problem, and then to transfer one of the chest muscles to the scapula to hold it in place. It will require a lot of recovery time and he said I would need help when I go home.
I don't have a date yet but I need to line up the help.

Jackie, did they mention how they would do this?
How much recovery time?

Yes he did talk about how he would take the pectoralis major from the front of the chest and take a cadaver tendon to transfer the muscle to the scapula. They cannot use one of mine and the muscle isn't long enough to reach without the tendon. It is a more complicated surgery then the scapulectomy. The arm will be immobilized for 6 weeks. I will need to check out the length of time that I will need help.
And of course it is my right arm. I am right handed. I think the doctors were referring to dressing and driving. I will need to ask many more questions.
I also emailed my spine doctor to see if there was anything in this that may bother the spine fusion. I don't think so but I still want to ask.
All of the tests came back normal but there is still a problem.
The other option is to do nothing and live with the dysfunction of my arm. That will be hard. There isn't any stability in the shoulder. So no reaching or lifting. It will be hard to live with.

hope you don't mind me going off topic but I looked at your signature and notes that you had fusion on your neck.
I have just had my latest apt and we are sort of back on the surgery route. However my neck curve is relatively new and although it is structural the surgeon thinks it will bend out if I have thoracic and lumbar fused. His sort of 'throwaway' comment was that 'he never fuses cervical vertebrae'
Would you mind sharing details of your neck fusion.
The cervical was fused just like the rest of the spine. There are Small plates and screws on the left side of the cervical vertebrae. This way you can rotate your neck but not put your neck to shoulder. I developed a pinched nerve in that area. It radiates pain down your arm. Just like sciatica. I was not fused because of a curve in the cervical it was the compromised nerves. It is much easier then lumber surgery. Feel free to ask anything.
