revision number 5 ,an unusual fix

On Monday I will have my hopefully last revision surgery. It is an unusual fix to needing a thoracoplasty. Every doctor has decided that would be a very risky surgery. But my right scapula is trapped on my ribs 3,4,5. With ribs 3 and 4 being too far apart. So the team of doctors at the University of Chicago have come up with a different approach. I will have a scapulectomy and muscle reconstruction. I understand from the surgeon that he will remove as much of the scapula that he can and reattach the necessary muscles. Hopefully it will free the shoulder blade for normal movement but there is no promise that the shoulder will recover proper position. I will have no movement in my right arm for 6 weeks and then PT to try to recover the normal shoulder movement. The surgeon said he has only did this operation one other time. I like him a lot as he is real friendly and is very well recommended. At least he came up with a solution. He worked with their scoliosis specialist and this is what they came up with.

Jackie: Wow, you have been through the mill in trying to find a solution to your problem! I am glad that you sought that advice at Univ of Chicago and hope that this is your answer. I hope that this surgery gives you increased shoulder mobility!

Hello to all I am on the road to another recovery. As far as I know all went well . The surgeon removed the scapula across the ribs but we will not know if it worked for 6 weeks when I will start moving it myself. He said it will be challenge and a lot of work with PT. We scoliosis people all know how much work it is to recover from the scoliosis surgery. So I can say that I have faced difficulties before. My PT wants to attend the office appointment when I will be released for the recovery part. They have never seen this before.

The doctor told me has only did this surgery one other time so I didn't ask if that person recovered. We will see.
Thanks it all my scoliosis friends. We all know how important the support that we receive from each other is .
Good luck to Melissa as you face another procedure.
A very big thank you to all my many friends out there across the country and world.
    Happy 4th to all!

So good to hear from you, Jackie! May you be blessed with a successful recovery. It's a good sign that PT wants to meet with your surgeon.
