  • Dr. Edward Sun in San francisco bay area?

Anyone been to him? Would he be up for an adult revision/fusion to the sacrum? It seems like he has good training, and he is on the Scoliosis Research Board.
1st surgery: Fused T1-L3 in 1987 with contoured Harrington Rods. Rods broke at top.
2nd surgery: Re-done two weeks later; fused C7-L3. Left in chronic pain.
3rd surgery: Hardware removal 1997, but still pain for 30 years.
4th Surgery: Fused to the sacrum in 2016. Came out of surgery with left foot paralysis. (Drop Foot) Can't walk on my own.
I'm blessed to have found my peace and reason to live not from a husband or kids (I have none) but from God and within myself.

    Hi Tableone,

I don't remember ever hearing mention of him…have you considered UCSF? They have plenty of experienced revision surgeons, which is where Linda Racine works. There is also Serena Hu who is now at Stanford, she used to be at UCSF.

I personally would recommend being extremely selective and careful about who you allow to do your revision. You need an experienced scoliosis surgeon who does a lot of adult deformity revisions, in my opinion.

    Best of luck,

Well I'm looking for a private adult deformity surgeon (I'm not a good patient for a medical school due to my PTSD) and I'm looking ANYWHERE in California. I live in northern California, but I'll travel to Southern California too. It has to be in California as my secondary insurance is Medi-Cal. Problem is I have Medi-Care (primary) and many private docs no longer take that. If anyone knows of any decent adult deformity surgeons in California who take Medi-Care, please post a reply. Thank you,

How about Dr Bederman in So Cal? Melissa speaks very highly of him and he did a very complex revision on her.

Tableone, you might want to stay local

As an experienced patient flying to see doctors or travelling 5 hours, I can tell you it is no fun. You are always trying to juggle the calendar and then looking for transportation (airplane, or car, etc) Sometimes is for a checkup but in times of semi emergency then you are hours away and coordinating a driver, doctor's schedule, etc is hard.

Not to mention it is financially draining. Local is the most economic, you can get a cab and sleep at home. Elsewhere involve so many other logistics that the stress will cause pain and frustration.

I have seen this doctor, and I liked him however I was looking for a lot more experience. Dr Mundis is very gentle and great bedsize manners.

Turns out Dr. Edward Sun is a pediatric Scoliosis specialist even though his web bio on the SRS site states "adult Scoliosis." Anyway, thanks to both of you for the suggestions. Bederman is at a medical school, but I will check out the Scripps docs in Southern Ca.

Well I will be trying to see Dr. Rolando Roberto at UC Davis. I just spoke to his surgery scheduler and was informed that he does a fair amount of adult Scoliosis revision surgeries. Dr. Manish Gupta, whom I didn't want to see anyway, is leaving UC Davis. I don't want to go to a medical school because of my PTSD, but it seems I will have no choice as the private deformity surgeons don't take Medicare.
              Thank you,

If you would consider Dr Bederman, he does work wonders.
