  • Long Term Follow-Up on Scoliosis Exercise Program

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4243472/

Would have liked to see a comparator group of scoliosis patients who weren't enrolled in the program.

Conclusions. Participants with the history of exercise treatment generally did not differ significantly from their peers who were only under observation. This study cannot conclude that scoliosis-specific exercise treatment in adolescence alters quality of life in adulthood.

This is interesting for those that might have done any scoliosis specific exercise programs in the past. At the time, we “might” have participated we always wondered if it really did or would help? Especially if a parent was reminding us to do our exercises while we we struggling with the mental aspects of it all......For me, this brings back old memories (1970’s) of concerned looks on doctors faces, or even the possibility that they might not have had a clue on what to do.....I have seen this look quite a few times.

I have always been able to blow out 100 candles on a birthday cake even with a 70 degree cobb.

And all those scoliosis related wishes came true....

It could have been a whole lot worse.....always count your blessings.

I have to dump on this thread because I don’t want to start a new one.....Maybe it will stay hidden because its delicate.

I am not going to be active here much due to my own personal turmoil regarding my brother. He has a rare Klienfelter’s 48XXXY,(Yes, the X’s are bad) was involved in a 75MPH T bone accident and had brain surgery, so he is Schizophrenic now and can sometimes be hard to handle. I was in Colombia with him and relatives, dealing with his daily personalities.......and translating psychological aspects in Spanish. My brother is quite intelligent and flips out just like John Nash did in the movie “A Beautiful Mind”. Sigh.....Being positive takes on a new meaning.

When I say count your blessing’s, do that because I think that I am being tested to the hilt with all of this....Its ok, I survived scoliosis surgery, I can handle it. There are many personal decisions, extremely difficult decisions in a situation like this so my mind is completely consumed right now. When I write my book upon retirement there will be an involved chapter on this which will include my doubts about the Psychiatry profession and its “experimenting” with heavy medications which result in intense emotional situations. This can explain why I am negative about medications sometimes, maybe some of you will understand.....Don’t ask for proof here, its just not going to happen.

I do speed read here and follow along with everyone when I can, and appreciate all the members here and will try to offer some support....please don’t reply, I have to sort these extremely difficult decisions on my own....

.. a screening program for idiopathic scoliosis, conducted between 1984 and 1995 in the Centre of Corrective and Compensatory Gymnastics, Bielsko-Biala, Poland.

I have never heard about that centre, it's a pity it was not done in a Schroth Centre or Seas or other doing Torso Rotation or Yoga for scoliosis exercises.. something really sounding as 'specific scoliosis exercises'.

The conclusion should to be that scoliotic people in Poland should to be warned about this center. These guys should have known about what is used for scoliosis during last decades having to do with ‘specific scoliosis exercises‘ before doing such kind of study.

Dear Ed, so sorry to hear of your and your brother's suffering. I believe in prayer and am sending my best prayer effort. (Just happened to spot this sad post today).
Please allow me to express my sincere gratitude for your years of kindness to others, including me.

            main curve L Cobb 60, compensating T curve ~ 30
Flat back, marked lumbar kyphosis (grade?) Spondilolisthesis - everyone gives this a different grade too. Cervical stenosis op'd 3-07, minimally invasive

I was going to post here, too, until I saw the date.
Ed, I hope everything turned out all right. I've heard of Kleinfelter's Syndrom but never knew anyone that had it or was related to anyone that had it. I was filling in for my Genetics Professor (I was a TA in my senior year) and taught her labs for the week. It was about X inactivation. I had to check everyone's slide and was looking for a male that had one or more inactivated Xes. I didn't come across any, just a very sick young woman with a diplococci bacterial infection. I ushered her out quite quickly and told her to go straight to the doctor on campus and tell him/her what I found. She was potentially spreading pneumonia around. Yikes!

The other geneticist on campus has a brother with Prader Willie Syndrome. It causes a person to never have the sensation of being full. They gain a lot of weight and food has to be locked up as they can eat themselves to death. They are always hungry. This is what drove the professor to study genetics. Ironically, he's now a plant geneticist.

Again, I hope all is well. I don't believe I ever saw this post as I was taking a break from the forum at that time. I'm glad you came back to us!

                  Be happy!
We don't know what tomorrow brings,
                  but we are alive today!
