Anyone have any tips for the best way to hang out at the beach with a fused spine? 14 months post op and my hamstrings are still too tight to allow me to sit up on the ground. I'm thinking maybe a folding camp stool? This is slightly harder than I thought it would be. Although, can't complain too much, the beach is lovely! Just wish my recovery would speed itself up. I had sort of hoped I would be further along at this point, and not having so much trouble just sitting on a beach blanket. All this crawling around is really causing some pain around my spine area, in between my hip bone and my rib cage, I think from trying to lever myself off the ground every time I get up. I'm trying not to get discouraged, but I just want to be normal again!

I have bought quite a few different types of portable chairs through the years.......
This one is my current favorite.....It has lumbar support and shoulder slings and is adjustable through the straps.....its also very light.

Also, take a large beach towel......laying down is an important option.

Agree with Ed- I own this chair after much shopping around. I am three years out of a T-10- L5 fusion, attend summer concerts on a regular basis and this chair is perfect! Sitting on the beach without a chair is pretty much impossible for me to even attempt. Oh well, all is good with a few life moderations. Best of luck.

Hi Nan!
Hope things are well in Utah and the back is good!
Sitting is a science for us.....even though I have that backpack chair, I also like variety in chairs....provided they offer some sort of lumbar support.
I can point out THE absolute worst pick for scolis....see attachment. This setup is the worst thing we can sit on. It even hurts to look at it. (smiley face)

Baroness, This is also another chair I own.....which is an option.....It’s a little heavy but comfortable.
Chairs are like beds, you have to go to the store and sit on them or lay on them for a decent amount of time to make a decision.

i have a reclining chair like the first one Ed showed...
it reclines and tilts....alll the waaaaay back....it takes the weight
off spine and makes me feel float-y....
(but i have not had surgery)
it feels like it relieves all pressure...
heavier to carry than the one shown though...
the foot rest section looks longer on mine...
but so very comfortable...purchased at a hardware store
a couple years ago...they still sell it....
jess....and Sparky
(he jumps up on it and loves it, too)Last edited by jrnyc; 08-31-2014, 08:08 PM.

Hi Baroness,
It's been a while since I've popped by the forum - I don't have much advice for you beach chair wise since I didn't enjoy the New England beaches much this summer. I find i'm now ok sitting cross-legged, otherwise I like to lie down on a blanket on the beach. Just wanted to offer you a little encouragement - I'm 1.5 years out from surgery and I continue to feel better and better. The improvement continues to surprise me. I'm also relieved that I feel so much better because my husband and I brought this little guy home 4 weeks ago and life will never be the same. I didn't anticipate how much bending I would have to do, but thankfully I'm fine with it and it's all worth it. His name is Quimby and he's a mini-labradoodle. Quimby10.jpg
Hope you continue to improve as well, aileen
