    Sharon...

I'm not sure why the chose the word implants for that piece. While a disc replacement is an implant, it's just one of many types. Disc replacements are typically called arthroplasty. The procedure he's talking about is a pedicle subtraction osteotomy, which is fairly common in complex spine surgery these days.

I don't recall ever hearing of anyone trying an artificial disc to replace a previous fusion. I'd be VERY concerned that the disc replacement is going to plow right through the vertebrae above and below, as I believe disc replacement needs vertebral endplates, which would not be present in a previously fused segment (assuming the fusion actually was complete).

Okay then! Thanks for the clarification. I just saw it and thought it might be of interest.

I suspect some poor reporting and it would be nice to have the procedure and the device used clarified....

They show a articulating device, but don’t mention it? Its like, We have this new car for sale, sorry we didn’t mention that it also fly’s.

This is very interesting, perhaps a friendly e-mail would clarify exactly what happened here.

          Are those stats true?
100,000 fusion failures per year in the U.S. alone?

i thought both are done in conjunction...??
for example, fusion of spine, and discs replaced with "cages," from side
incision, at the same time...that was what i was told by all the surgeons
            i saw....
i was also told that just doing disc replacement is not possible for
scoliosis spines....that fusion must be done along with disc replacement...

that is why my friend's husband could have simple arthroscipic disc
surgery...and did fine...because he had no other spinal problems....
            no scoliosis...

Jess, based on what you wrote, it doesn't seem this implant is relevant or even potentially relevant to scoliosis. Had I known that, I wouldn't have posted it.

                It's not a new implant. I can't tell for sure, but I think it's a ProDISC-C.

                  I found a video....
                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDqziDQMx40

Amazing engineering, and good to know. Maybe not for scoliosis, but the kind of thing that we full fusion patients should be aware of due to our necks. I hope I don’t have to get serious and have to make a decision in this arena some day.

I have realized and now know some things about my twin cervical herniation’s.

                  1) They were there when my spine was done in 2008. Its documented in the hospital reports. No pain at that stage, but herniated.
                  2) Pain elevated upon high stress. Twice, during grief, and upon flying to South America.
                  3) Stress is a killer. Do whatever is necessary to de-stress.
