  • Faithful Friends Program

did not know where to post this....

just saw presentation on NBC Brian Williams news about a program
at Maryland University Hospital that allows patients own pets to come visit them...patients who are seriously ill from major surgery...
they showed one example of a young man who had transplant
surgery getting visits from his Lab...and how it helped him recover....

all dogs in these programs are screened, groomed and checked for all
    vaccinations...
these programs are said to be growing in popularity in hospitals and
    hospices...

    sounds right to me.

As much as I love my animals when I have them, I don't think I would want them in the hospital with me. However, when I had a surgery and was recovering at home my late Chihuahua, Juliet, laid by my side nearly motionless while I recovered. I didn't even have to get up to take her potty as she was litter box trained. The only problem with having her there was once, when a friend came to visit she stood up snarling and barking which made such a ruckus that I HAD to get up to calm her down. But, in her defense, my friend was inconsiderate and didn't make arrangements in advance to come and walked right into my bedroom while I was sleeping. I was more irritated with my friend than my dog! LOL
    Be happy!
We don't know what tomorrow brings,
    but we are alive today!

I have 2 cats. One who sleeps with me. When I got home ,last Thursday, she was so happy and excited to see me. If I was in my bed, she never left my side

              Very cool, Jess.

I know that Shriners in Philly offered pet therapy when my son had his surgery, but I imagine for most pet owners, there's nothing quite like having your own pet right there with you!

By the way, Jackie turned 4 this past Tuesday!

Seems like just yesterday we brought her home from the shelter as a 6 month old pup!

                    happy 4th birthday sweet Jackie...

hospitals would do so well with therapy dogs available to
                    all patients...
they used to bring therapy dogs into a school i worked at for
emotionally disturbed children...of course the kids loved it...

i know people with new spines cannot move any which way....
but calm dogs will just lay with the patient....and help bring
                    them calm and joy...
                    great medicine for anyone...

I would love this program. We have two dogs, a big old lovable boxer named Taylor who doesn't eat or play too well when I am not around. (Luckily she attached ok to my mom and did well while I was gone for surgery) and we also have a sweet energetic min pin named Harley. I would have loved a visit from either of them and my min pin is my little cuddle bug, she is 6 lbs.
When I got home, Taylor's head lands perfectly level with my bed and she would prop up right there and just watch me. God love her! Harley on the other hand had to be monitored a bit closer as she liked to run across me and it wasn't so comfortable. She did better to curl up with me once I was positioned. Taylor also laid right next to the bed day and night which caused a hazard when I would get up. She is an older dog, getting hard on hearing, so I would just have to remember to jostle my feet first to wake and move her. She ALWAYS knew when I was having a bad day. Still does. Never leaves my side. She has cancer and arthritis pretty bad but she would be walking the house with me every day! My sweet girl.
Our own pets can be the best therapy ever!

                        how sweet, Jen...

am mourning a Dalmatian named Sable...she had to be put down last week...she was very old, incontinent, going blind...
she lived in CA, next door to my aunt's house...
sweet, independent dog...Dallies get a bad rap....do not deserve
                        it, in my experience...

nothing can put a smile on a patient's face as fast as a dog...
                        like watching magic work...
i wish every hospital could have a pet therapy program...
                        pets...not just for children...
