  • Did you get your results, Jess?

Poor Sparky. I know how much of a worry it is when our pets are unwell. Let us know how he goes as well.

    • Best wishes for both you and Baby Sparky!

We can send a man to the moon but we can't shut down puppy mills. Truth is stranger than fiction.

They will figure out what is going on with your fluctuating hormone levels and then you can go from there. Have they mentioned they have seen that before?

      No island of sanity.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?
      Answer: Medicine

      • Jess,
So sorry to hear that Sparky is sick again.
I hope they figure it out for you both. He means a lot to you.
I don't know which would be worse. They can take the prostate out in humans.
Kidneys are tougher to deal with and dialysis is expensive, so I hope it's not that.

Woofs to Sparks. I hope you both feel better.
        Be happy!

        • to Jen, Sharon and rohr...
thank you so much for the kind words...
i didn't get over to hospital to get my cortisol results today...
          going tomorrow...

today i was at vet....luckily Monday is sonogram day there...
Sparky had a sonogram....same problem again...
the cysts on prostate are getting larger....bacteria in urine,
and crystals...crystals are from not drinking enuf water...
they sent urine to outside lab to find out what antibiotic
to give him....he will probably need same surgery again...

i have to research why a dog who is fixed needs to keep prostate...
          i do not know why...
i switched him back to special prescriptive food for dogs with urinary tract/kidney problems...he won't eat tonight...
i mixed it with real chicken to get him interested...NOPE...
refuses to eat it...this happened before til i caved..

          haven't caved in yet....
he is giving me looks like "i waited all day to eat and you feed
          me this awful looking stuff....?"

          ahhhhh....no good deed goes unpunished....

thanks again for the kind concern....

          • Jess,
I know in humans, they have a problem with urinary incontinence after prostate removal. Maybe the same for dogs?
I hope he gets better. Ask the vet about removing the prostate. He/she will know.

I hope your hormone levels are okay or at least they figure out what's going on with you.
            Keep us posted.

if he goes three days i will have to cave...vet told me not to go
beyond three with him not eating...stubborn boy...

going to hospital to get blood work results on cortisol today

              • picked up lab results...the way i read the numbers, it looks
to me like i do not have Addison's, but i have very low cortisol...
it appears my levels came up after they injected me...which
should mean my body is able to make cortisol...
but i will wait til i see endo doc...next week, May 13th....
after that, i expect to find a good endocrinologist in Manhattan
and try to find out why my levels are so low and i am so
                exhausted all the time....
there is a chance lowering my thyroid meds might help...that will
be discussed with doctor and hormone doc in Venice CA in phone
                consult...

wonder if this means i could risk another STEROID shot in hip....?
i really need one for left hip...bursitis is burning...

on other topic, i caved after Sparky did not eat canned special
food for 2 days...and gave him food he likes....he goes on
antibiotics next week and i cannot have him weak from not
eating...i will fight the "right canned food" fight another day...

You were right to use your best judgement. I did not force feed Fluffy as much as I should have because he just despised it. But I did everything else and his kidney and liver enzyme levels were back to normal but he is very anemic. I am going to try baby food.

We do the best we can.

                  • thanks Sharon....yes, true...we do the best we can for the little guys....hope Fluffy feels a little better every day...

i do not know if another half dose steroid shot would drop my cortisol to zero again...
i do have dental surgery/implant to get done that i put off when i went for Addison's test.....trying to reschedule it for end May....that will be physically stressful, so i do not know that i should try steroid shot same time...
but the bursitis is causing burning pain again....so hard to take...

i never knew scoliosis had so many complications to other parts of the body....don't know why i didn't see it coming, since everything is connected....i just never did....thought pain would be limited to my spine, which was bad enough...did not see hip and neck and all the other places becoming
problems too...did not realize how much harm a crooked spine could lead to.

                      Hi Jess,

I've been away for a few days, just wondering how you and Sparky are. So sorry about that horrible burning, it must be so hard to live with.

It's amazing with animals (I have two cats.) If they don't like the food, they will starve themselves before they eat it. I think sometimes that when this happens, we suffer for them more than they suffer themselves.

                      • hi Jen
thanks for the kind words...i am considering asking pain doc
for another half dose steroid shot in left hip that burns so
badly...will risk my cortisol level dropping all the way down
                        again....

got a call today that Sparky's urine grew ZERO bacteria in the lab...
so the problem is his prostate...and he needs surgery soon...
he sees his regular vet May 12th, Monday, for more vaccinations...
so we will discuss it then...
this is something he was born with as a puppy mill dog....poor baby...
i am afraid he may need the surgery on prostate every 2 years or so...
he brightens every day for me...so i want to try to make him healthy
and happy....and keep him from pain.

                        have a peaceful restful wkend...

                        • I wonder why it's so hard to clamp down on puppy mills? We have the same problem here. All the best to Sparky.

I can understand you wanting to take the risk with your cortisol. I can't imagine having that burning every day. Good luck Jess, with whatever you decide.
