  • my GP says my ACTH numbers are way off...and she does not
think it is from steroid shot, cause the numbers would be going
in opposite direction if it were...sending me to endocrinologist
as soon as i can get appt...i need an all day blood test of some
kind...they give you medicine and take blood every X number of hours...
she said the ACTH is why i am so tired...

also...neck MRI shows herniated disc at C6/7, endplate degenerative signal....minor posterior spurring...mild to moderate annular disc
protrusion....which causes mild mass effect on ventral aspect of spinal canal...and mild bilateral foraminal narrowing...

    does not sound pretty.

    • Jess, that must have been somewhat surprising. Hopefully that will be sorted out and you can continue the steroid injections. I am hoping so. Are the steroids the best form of pain control you have?

      • hey Sharon
yes, the steroid shots gave me the most relief...ever since doctor
found that sacroiliac area was key to relieving my lumbar pain..
and yes, it was surprising to hear my GP say she does not think the
change in ACTH level is related to steroid half dose shot i had...
but i need to hear what the endocrinologist has to say about that...
and see what the tests that doctor does will show about my cortisol
and ACTH levels...and their ability to come back...
the fear with steroid shots is that any time they cause levels to drop,
there is a very real risk that those levels might not come back.

        thanks for the kind concern.

        • went to a new endocrinologist today...
she gave me orders for more blood work, including a retest of cortisol and ACTH levels...

thanks, rohr, for suggesting i get the blood work done before i ask for another steroid shot in left hip....my GP and the endo doc said it is doubtful that the injection caused my ACTH level to shoot up, but you are right that this lab work be done before i get anymore steroid stuff in my body.

thanks for steering me in the right direction.

          • newest blood work shows low cortisol again...
            i knew it...i am SO tired...no matter what...just exhausted...
waiting for doc to call with exact numbers...
also do not know what ACTH is at now...

don't know if this could be from 20 mg little steroid shot i
            got in hip in January...
my GP sent me to endocrinologist, whom i see again this Thursday, because she wants to know why my cortisol and ACTH numbers "fluctuate"

was supposed to have last dental implants done next week....
probably gonna postpone...it involves two extractions and one
implant put in same day...too much stress on body, i think...
            rats...very frustrated with this...

this is why it is so hard for me to walk poor puppy every day....
so exhausted...but i walked him today...felt like i ran the marathon...
and that left hip is burning again...but i don't dare get another
little steroid shot....maybe my system can't even handle the little shots...

will see what GP has to tell me tonite,
and what tests endocrinologist wants to do when i
                see her this Thursday.

                your kindness is much appreciated

                • Jess I'm so sorry your are still dealing with your cortisol levels. How long did it take to recover them the last time?

I'm glad you will get answers tonight. It sounds like these numbers shouldn't fluctuate so maybe it isn't due to the steroid shot. I hope someone can tell you if a 20 mg shot can move the needle on a person's cortisol level. Whatever it is I hope the fix includes allowing you to safely get the steroid shots.

                  • thanks for the concern, Sharon
right now i am not thinking about the steroid shots, as
adrenal insufficiency is an extremely serious problem...it can
become life threatening...the hip pain is burning, but it won't kill
                    me...hah

i will see at endocrinology appt this Thursday when the blood
test to narrow down cause of adrenal numbers being low will
                    be done.
i just know they draw the blood every certain number of hours
                    after giving you some medication...
my GP said it could be pituitary problem instead of adrenal
glands, but the MRI of pituitary was clear...that was a few years
ago when this all started...i keep thinking a year ago, but it is
                    longer than that...

my cortisol is now at a low of 3.9 and ACTH at a low of 26
a month ago cortisol was 10.2 and ACTH too high at 98.
it is not even a case of levels coming back up....they keep going
up and down, repeatedly...gotta find out why.

So sorry to hear you've had to deal with all this - did you find out anything further?

Fingers crossed that they can get to the bottom of this and get you some answers soon!!

thanks so much for the concern

i was able to move endocrinology appointment forward to tomorrow...Wednesday...at urging of my GP

they have to schedule tests...blood, and possible CT scan of abdomen, which is where adrenal glands are located....i didnt even know where they are...
i will find out the rest of my basic blood test results tomorrow...but the low cortisol and very low ACTH are the most important...the test they will schedule is the all day ACTH blood test...i have to find out if that is in doc office or hospital...

thanks again for the support...very much appreciated.

                          • I have heard of tests, in the case of children, performed at the request of an endocrinologist where they draw blood every hour or so - I'm guessing it may be the same type of thing - I think this sort of test can be done either in the office or as an outpatient in a hospital, depending on the way the practice is set up.

Hang in there - hopefully, they can get this sorted out for you soon - you have been on this roller coaster long enough!!

xoxo and woofs from me and Jackie!!

                              • have to swing by hospital to get copy of blood test
results from cortisol test i had last week...endo doc does
not call patients...do not like her and do not expect to stay
                                with her past the results...
i WISH i could get steroid shots...both hips hurt now...
left one burns again with bursitis...am guessing right hip
is developing bursitis too, from uneven loading thing with
                                scoli

main worry now is Sparky is sick again...fear it is prostate
again or kidneys...he has vet appt tomorrow, Monday, May 5th
at 12:30....his regular vet is on vacation....seeing different
vet, same animal hospital....he drinks less and less water and it
causes big problems, but real reason for all of this is that he is
a puppy mill dog...poor baby has been sick too much in his short
                                7 years....

sorry off topic....but this dog helps me feel better in so many
                                ways....such a sweet boy.....does not deserve this...

                                woofs to all
