  • Maria, thank you so much...

he is having emergency surgery NOW...
could not wait because the crystals were blocking catheter...

we went in to feed him....he does not eat much in hospital...
and they told us then....do not feed him...vet wants to talk
    to you....
i signed papers and paid more $$...
because this little angel is a puppy mill dog.

    thanks for the kind concern...
waiting to hear from vet in a few hours...

          • thank you, Sharon....so kind of you...
he came thru surgery OK...vet called last nite and this
morning....he might come home for Christmas....and be
under his human momma's watchful care....because the wound
has to heal, and the vet warned us before surgery that it can
            look "raw" for awhile.

i am tense half the time....and everyone here knows what that
does to muscles, and the entire body. Overdue for botox shots
in upper spine, i put them off to January...and doctor is overbooked
so a change of appt is not possible.

i wrote a letter to the pet store, cc: to media....about how the
place we got pup sold us a puppy mill dog, and all the heartache
that comes with it. i am hoping and praying some media picks it
up...maybe in January, usually a slow news month. the letter
includes a picture of the baby, with IV in his paw, at the hospital.

            thanks again...
            best wishes to all...

                  • Yes kisses to Baby Sparky!

Oh I hope he can be home with his family for Christmas.

It boggles my mind that we can send a man to the moon and not be able to police puppy mills.

                    • dear Maria and Sharon
thank you to both of you....you know what animals mean to some of us...
i waited all my life for this dog...first thing on my list when i retired...

i hope my letter is picked up somewhere...National Humane Society said they would use "Sparky's story" in their literature against puppy mills. i keep wishing and hoping for a true animal lover in the White House.
was it Gandhi who said how we treat our disabled and elderly is a measurement of civilization....something to that effect....?

well....how we treat our helpless animals as well...they do not need to "better regulate" puppy mills. they need to be shut down...period.
everyone knows the difference between a breeder and a puppy mill....doesn't take a rocket scientist...

sorry....i know this is scoli forum...but he is registered as an emotional support animal as well.

maybe my muscles will hurt less once he is home. i ache, as mentioned, and it takes a toll....all stress does.

                        • hi Rise
                          thanks for the quote...
                          it is true.
which is why the puppy mills are a disgrace to this wonderful
                          country we live in.

wishing you a happy healthy holiday season.

                          • Thanks Jess and same to you and Sparky! I had a cat, Dusty, that had a very similar surgery many years ago. This condition is actually not that uncommon in male cats. At the time the surgery was over $2,000 and being newly married and in law school my husband and I didn't exactly have that kind of money. Seeing Dusty suffer was beyond awful but our vet worked with us (we paid the surgery off over time) and Dusty recovered (slowly) and went on to live a fairly long life (it's never long enough though I'm afraid). One caveat, diet is very important. Dusty had to be on a special urinary tract diet. Hill's makes it and I would think they make a similar one for dogs.

Wishing you and Sparky a very healthy and pain free New Year!

                            • thanks, Rise
was told diet is more for oxalate crystals than struvite, which
is kind he has....we did have consults on phone with Tufts
U School of Vet Medicine and are giving him the Wellness
                              food they recommended...
when we thought it was oxalate, i bought Hills and Royal Canin
and every one made for urinary problems...he refused to touch
them....fussy little boy....very fussy about food...
after holidays, i have call in to Tufts for another consult on
struvite crystals...but i know drinking water is key...and Sparky
never ever drank enuf water...or any other beverage i tried with him....
that is why i have appt end of Dec to learn how to give
him subcutaneous fluids under the skin....he will NOT like that,
                              either...what dog would...?

the tension in my upper and lower spine is so bad now, my back
is seizing up.....doubt ER could help me...
they don't generally have botox around for emergencies....to
relieve the muscle tension and seizing...
i know it is being worsened by stress....i have slept little...
runs to Vet Hospital 30 minutes away, at 2 a.m. is not
                              good for sleeping....
                              but it saved his life.

thanking all who have sent kind thoughts....
and a very Merry to all.

                              • Helpful info possibly for Sparky...

I am a huge dog person, my husband says that I must be part dog. Anyway, I used to have the most finicky Great Dane in the world! I miss her dearly. Anyway, have you tried making up some beef or chicken broth for water, instead of plain water? I know that my Dane loved loved loved anything remotely chicken flavored, so whenever she was not up to drinking water, I would melt some chicken bouillon into some water, chill and serve =) Also, it sounds truly mean out of context, but if it were me, and I had to do it before to save her life more than once, when they get hungry enough they will eat the food. Heartbreaking yes, but not as heartbreaking as having them suffer with surgery, etc. Just sharing my thoughts. Please try to rest, and know that all will be normal (for us) again soon. Hugs...
                                Hugs,
