Hi Sherry
I have owned a few beds in my time, and I guess the best advice I can give is to go and sleep on a friends bed or go to the store and ask them if you can crash for the afternoon. I did this around 7 years ago, and bought a medium tempurpedic. I had the $2400 cash and told them that I would pay only upon delivery. I will NOT pay for furniture up front anymore and wait forever.....been there, done that...this is common in the furniture business. (Scoliosis patients need to have the “I need this bed, and I need it NOW attitude” Now, means delivered in 60 minutes, “You have a truck ready?” Otherwise, no deal. Walk out.
One of the big problems with beds is “hammocking”. If you lay a straight edge down the length of the bed, there should be no sagging. If its 1 inch, its hammocked. The tempurpedic does not do this, it has passed the test. It is still dead flat after 7 years. Love it!
The cheapo way is to buy a hard stiff mattress, and a good “latex” (white) foam topper a few inches thick. A 4 inch topper on the floor with the right durometer, or hardness is a pretty good setup. Overstock.com has them.
If I fly somewhere and stay in a hotel, I cant sleep well at all....once you get used to the tempurpedic, its heaven. They also take around a week or so to get used to them. I thought I made a mistake in the first few days......
Glad to see you are doing ok...

Another cheap way to stiffen up an old bed is to lay a sheet of 1/2” plywood on the box spring. Measure the bed and go to Home depot, they will saw for you there at the store, and will also deliver it.
Just laying a mattress on the floor is a good test for the mattress. It eliminates fatigued box spring problems.
Many posters here also like the sleep member adjustable beds....you might check one of those out.
A guarantee on a bed would also be a great idea.....this is where you can return and exchange if you don’t like a bed.

Thank you so much for your post Edd.My husband and I went looking for beds last weekend and I was so sore just trying them out .I really like the feel of the Tempur-Contour Select which is extra firm and very pricey. And yes they said after 90 days we could return the bed. They also said it smells for like a month which is normal and it will go away?Did you notice yours having an odor? Also looked at the sleep number bed but I am still numb and could not feel any difference in the feel 45 100.All I know is I have needed a bed like 4 years agoAug.17,09 Anterior

There are quite a few other threads on this topic. Try a search on the word mattress.

We bought a sleep number bed a number of years ago and didn't like it. Slept on it for about a month and then packed it up(a difficult job) and returned it. We are now considering a Tempur Pedic bed. We have relatives who bought a knock off and they said to get the real thing. When we travel I have a one inch thick twin size memory foam topper which we roll up and tie and it really helps in sleeping in a hotel bed. I had fusion surgery 6 months ago, T4-sacrum.

My Doctor wrote an order for a tempurpedic bed. I did invest in one about 6 months after surgery. I could not stay asleep in a regular bed. My hip hurt too much. The new bed made a huge difference as I can now sleep for a few hours at a time. It is hard to turn though. My bed is also a medium. And well worth the money spent. I will probably never meed another one.T10-pelvis fusion 12/08
