Growing bone
i just started getting a magazine called "The Bark"
i like it a lot...it is about dogs, of course...
there is an article in Winter 2012 edition called "Growing Bone,"
about a dog named Whiskey, a hunting breed i never heard of, called a "Small Munsterlander"...(looks like a Pointer) who had cancer in his jaw...the doctors knew they could cut out the bone, but then he would not be able to chew anything dogs love, like chewies or bones, and would not be able to play ball or tug of war....
so they made bone for him...they gave him a "bionic jaw," using his own
stem cells, a titanium plate, a "scaffold"....and BMP...
they took the technology they use for people and applied it to animals..
one day, it will come back to be used to help humans..."for human arms
and leg bones" though it has "not been done for weight bearing bones yet"
it was done at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine....
so far, 8 dogs have undergone the procedure, and all are doing well...

find it online...go to The Bark...it is in issue #72...
