    Can one build the week side of their back?

    Hi everyone- I'm 20 and I have had a 20 degree curve since I was 14. It is an s-bend kind of thing going on that cocks to the left at the pelvis, and then straightens back to the right at the mid section of my back.
    Just this past year, I began making the effort to assume a great posture. I can easily stand straight now is I keep my shoulders back, however- my left side (concave part) is HUGE compared to the right side. It has been non stop constantly sore and swollen as long as I hold the good posture (feels constantly like the burn after weightlifting) and it is so protruded, that when sitting on a chair, the right side of my back doesn't even make it to touch the back of the chair.
    Anyone have success getting through this? Are there stretches or lifting exercises that can help strengthen the right side up to par?

    Have you been checked by a scoliosis specialist since age 14 to monitor your curve? Make sure that doctor is a scoliosis specialist who treats adults. If possible try to get your old X-rays for comparison.
    Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
    Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

    Hi and thanks. I have actually, just not an adult specialist. After 3 years (when I was 17) I had two pediatric specialists and my GP say that the curve stabilized. I haven't seen a doctor since though. I don't think it has gotten worse. I have just been walking around crooked for so long, and now that I am actively standing up straight with my shoulders back... things are working overtime.

    I'm considering going back to see a phys. therapist, but don't want to do so unless I really feel that would help me out. I already see so many doctors for other more severe chronic conditions - it's starting to cost a lot of money in co-pays.

    The absolute best advice I can give you is to please take notice of Karen and do what she recommends. Physical therapists, Chiropractors and the like are Ok for what they do, but you must find please where you are as far as your scoliosis is concerned.
