  • Leg giving away

I saw my spine specialist--he took x-rays and changed my meds.Said he did not think it was the spine. I have a full spine and 3 level neck fusion . all surgeries have been done in last 3 years. Does any one have this issue or any suggestions? Please help!

Jackie, you might want to type in a search at the top of the
page, something like "leg collapsed"...and see what comes up...
also, forum member "rockycarm" addressed the issue of leg weakness...

    best of luck finding answers...

Thanks for the suggestion.I have been taking the new med{lyrica} since Thursday. I just had a serious reaction to it .Spoke to the Dr office ---I need to not take this ,go back on gabapentin and the Dr will call on Monday.I actually could not pick my legs up to walk. I had a lot of thing to do today that will not get done until this med clears my body. I did read a few of the posts about "leg collapesed".
Has any one else had problems with lyrica?

I have been taking lyrica since 2008 and love it. I started , at first , to take because of my fibro. Then my pain levels got worse the dosage increased. It is a wonder drug for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am not sure if it is muscle weekness in the leg. They actually seem very strong. The best the Dr and I can come up with is the leg did not get the signal from the brain that I was walking. It is fast and very scarry. Because of the fall,I had a new set of x-rays,and all seems to be fine. Dr thinks it is healed, but he may do another mylogram and mri if the leg keeps acting up.We tried to change me off of gabapentin to lyrica, but I had a major reaction to the lyrica. I am back to gabapentin. My right leg still has a "bee sting feel". I am to call him back on Monday.. See where we go from there.I have always just walked with only small problems. This is scarry though.
I know most people reading this understand that these types of problems just keep coming along with dealing with scoliosis. I also think I am leaning to the right some and maybe that is why my right leg bothers me.
Another question, for those fused to sacrum--can you sit? It seems if I cannot sit for any amount of time, even if it is over 3 yrs since the surgery there.

I am fused to the sacrum and it took me a long time before I could sit for any length of time in a softer chair. I am still uncomfortable sitting and riding in a car for any length of time. My right leg gave away on me occasionally several years before I had surgery on my back. I went for PT and did a lot of leg strengthening exercises which helped.

Yes, trouble sitting here--fused to sacrum.

I had my leg give out a couple of times pre- op when I was pregnant. Felt like sudden sciatica.

If it happens again and your spine doc doesn't think it's your back, you should see your primary care doc just to rule out other issues.

I have started Pt for the leg issue. I am working with a different member of staff in the therapy place that I have always used. Since my surgery was done at 3 different times I have been in therapy over the last 3 and a half years at different times. since this leg won't settle down the Dr ordered this. It has been real interesting. When I told the Dr that I was losing my balance and leaning to the right,he said all older people lose their balance. At therapy they discovered that I have a leg length issue. It seams as if some muscle in the pelvis is pulling too hard and causing the right leg to be shorter. So, no wonder I am leaning to the right. We are just begining on this. I am sure as soon as we can figuare this out the Pt will reach out to the DR.Right now we are working on some smaller inner muscles to see if that will help pull this leg where it needs to go. The actual legs are the same when measured, but after I sit the right one is shorter. Has anyone else had something like this. I trully hope the pelvic fusion in not loose. That would not be good!

Need to ask another question. It seams as if this problem is causing the hip to be higher on the right side. The Pt thinks it is a s1 issue. If the hardware is loose there would this issue be created? The Dr did xrays, but I am not sure if he looked that far down as these xrays were taken standing.Since the Dr passed it off as all older people loose their balance and the Pt thinks it has come from a developing shorter leg, I am just wondering where to go next. I am fused the total spine t2-pelvis and c5,6,7.
