  • Denervation at L1L2 facet joint

    Hi all,
I decided to start my own denervation thread since the other one got away from the topic. I will be going in for a denervation procedure (Radio frequency nerve ablation) at the L1L2 facet joints. Both Dr. Rand and Dr. Hey said that they feel I would benefit from it. I really don't understand how that will help with my nerve pain down my leg, but I will give it a try. My disc at L1L2 has degenerated above my fusion. My pain isn't bad enough to require fusing another level. So, wish me luck and say a little prayer if so inclined. The quest to be relatively pain free. Ha ha!

I hope you get some relief too. This has happened to me as well the degeneration in the lumbar part of the back. It is winter over here at the moment and I must say the jolly pain is getting to me, sorry about moaning, this is why I will pray that your pain will really be helped. I know what it is like, as so many others oh here do as well. This forum helps.

        Hi Sally

I hope this offers some relief. I guess you cannot go wrong with both Dr Rand and Dr Hey suggesting this.

Will Dr Hey do this? Are you close to him?

          Hi Ed,

We are about two hours away from Dr. Hey. I don't think he personally will do the procedure. It will be done at a pain clinic near him that he recommends. No one does it here in New Bern. I don't have a date yet.

Thanks to all for the encouraging words.

I read a lot about the procedure but my MD decided that I was not a good candidate for it. I thought that it sounded like a good procedure to try, and if you didn't get results, you'd know right away. Good luck! Hope that it works for you!!!!!!!

I saw the pain clinic Doctor in Raleigh today and he doesn't think that the nerve ablation at L1L2 facet joint will help with the pain in my leg and doesn't think that my insurance would cover it anyway. We are going to try upping my gabapentin dosage and then if that doesn't work, he will try me on Lyrica. He was very nice, easy to talk to and was trained in New York City. Actually, I was wondering how a nerve ablation at L1L2 was going to have any effect on my leg pain so I asked the Doc why would two highly qualified scoliosis specialists suggest such a thing. He said that was not their area of expertise, but that it was his. He probably is correct in saying that. So we slog on.

Have you tried a cortisone and lidocaine injection? I had sciatic pain which radiated around to the front of my thigh. After my injection which was over a month ago, I have had rare twinges of buttocks pain and no thigh pain. My injection was at L4.
Sure hope that you find some relief.

Sal, am just wondering if SI joint injections
                  might help with your pain???...
am asking because when i got them (on both sides)
it relieved lower back pain...including nerve related pain...
                  just wondering...
i hope pain doc can find something that really works...
it took me so long to find the SI spot, and i went thru
so many shots before we found it...
i hate that i can't get them anymore...

                  hope you feel better....
