  • New tx for bad discs

there was a story on CBS Sunday Morning today, about a new tx for bad discs....
it said the tx should be available in 5 years...
it involves injecting "biologic material" into bad discs, instead of doing surgery....
it includes using stem cells as well as other materials...
the procedure is said to cost 95% less than surgery for bad discs...

i am not suggseting anyone in pain wait 5 years...just that this seems promising...
it doesn't help scoliosis....but who knows what the future may bring...

This company has a “steerable” disc delivery device...a good thing, maybe not sliced bread, but good.

For those interested in syringe history. Fairleigh Dickinson Jr. was my neighbor as a child in Rutherford, NJ....It’s a small world.

A little trivia and braggadocious behaviour.

If you notice, Bard Parker is included in the BD history. They sold the best surgeons stethoscope many years ago, which my father made at his plant. I contributed as a teen making these....

I always look at scopes these days, and usually older surgeons use these scopes.....My vascular surgeon has one! I told him that I could have made your scope! Its not often that patients make their surgeons tools.....wow!

They are polished chrome plated brass, and have “BP” stamped on the backside. I still have one...

            very impressive, Ed...
i hope your father got credit for it...and some cash, too....
sounds like you inherited quite the inventive ability....and ability to work with tools...
how about inventing a flexible rod that supports the spine but flexes too....
surgeons tell me it would be impossible....

              Discs

During my revision my discs, in the fusion sites, were removed and the spaces packed with bone graft--never to bother me again. So while I gained an 1 1/2 inch, that shortens the spine some--but no pain for me.
I found this out when I read my full operative report.
              Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

well, yes, the surgeons want to do the rods from the back, then go in the sides
and put in cages to replace the bad discs...
i was just thinking that this new procedure may make any surgery for discs un-needed....
and people who do not need any other surgery could have an injection, and their discs
would be all fixed....pretty impressive stuff...

My father worked on the Leur-lok, that was a long, long, long, time ago.

He also made the surgeons, nurses, and pediatric BP scopes for many years. The pediatric scopes were only about 1” in diameter, and I would press a nail through and use as a top. They would spin for a long time due to the weight of the brass. (smiley face)

You know, they are right. A flexible rod system for scoliosis or kyphosis is a difficult prospect....the forces and loads required by the spine are too great to have something work without producing particulates. The size of a moveable device needs to be much larger than what they are using now, 6mm, and yes, it would break....it wouldn’t last long at all. If there was room, and the body could handle a much larger device, it would change everything, but that’s not the case. PEEK rods are used for 1 level only. Maybe they could expand on that concept.....every second level fused, or every 3rd level have PEEK for flexibility. I don’t know, its just an idea.

With the way I turned out, I have to say that having a full fusion really is adaptable and I’m very satisfied with my outcome. I never expected to come out as well as I did. Pain free is a possibility.

Injecting discs with stem cells is a great idea and I hope something happens soon. Like right now.

The world is waiting....7 billion people means 175 billion discs.
