What sort of problems do you have breathing? I only ask because I know I have some nasal polyps (they were seen on a head CT years ago), and tend to have an issue where I wake up with at least one side of my nose swollen quite a bit. Sometimes one side will get so inflamed that it closes up and I have to resort to using nasal sprays to try and create a space to breathe through. It's not congestion per se, it's inflammation for the most part. I was prescribed Nasonex and Astelin for both allergic rhinitis and vasomotor rhinitis, but an opthalmologist that I saw when my optometrist thought I might be close to developing glaucoma (which I don't want but am at high risk for since my mother had a pretty bad case of it for many years) warned me never to use a steroid nasal spray as it can lead to glaucoma.
My breathing problem is one that use to have me switching back and forth from sleeping on one side to sleeping on the other side all night long. If one side was inflamed, it was usually the side on the bottom, so I would turn over to the other side, and the inflammation would then ease up on that side as it switched down to the side that used to be on top but was then on the bottom. Sometimes if I was lucky, I'd turn over just enough to clear the one side, and then go to my back before the other side got inflamed.
But that was all before my surgery; I can't really do that easily anymore. Now an inflamed nostril will have me getting out of bed to go find the nasal spray. I wish I didn't have to do that, because I overused nasal sprays about 30 years ago, leading to a lot of nose bleeds. I don't want that to happen again.
Good luck with your surgery; hopefully it will be easier on you than your spine surgery.

Kara,
Be sure to let us know how you are doing after your surgery. After spine surgery, this will be a breeze for you. I can't believe you are 20? When I started reading the forum, you were 18. Time flies by quickly. Best of luck with your surgery.

Hi Kara,
Try not to be sad, you're going to do great. Think how much better you will feel after the polyp is gone. I bet you can take your new angry bird with you to the hospital. I am a nurse and I have a patient who has to come to our department frequently for procedures. She always brings her stuffed frog, Greenie, because he makes he feel better. We know Greenie as well as we know her now!
