Maybe it's not too late to include the whale in the BrAIST study. Or they can do a parallel study in whales. :-)

It makes you wonder why she got scoliosis AFTER she was in captivity. It may be something in her diet, poor thing!

I think if I had those trainers pushing on me, I would straighten up.

Poor whale is probably going to need fusion anyway...

I am betting it is a case of hysterical scoliosis.

Can they even sedate a whale to see?

I have no idea. But they have only had her since May. I am not sure she even grew if she wasn't a bebeh.

And they have other whales taken in at the same time from the same group who didn't develop anything. That suggests it is not the food or habitat per se but something particular to 300 that would not take that long to manifest.

If I remember the article right, weren't there several beached whales that were rescued at the same time as her? One could hypothesize that the pod of whales, aka her family, was trying to protect her from something and in the process they were all accidentally beached. Animals have an amazing sense when one is sick, especially the more intelligent animals.

I raised mice many years ago. Occaisonally one would get sick and die. EVERY time one got sick, it developed kyphosis and that was when I knew it would die. I also have had many fish over the years. Many of them would develope some sort of scoliosis before they died as well. I couldn't figure it out, as I was feeding all of the animals healthy food and taking proper care of them. It was just a thing that happened.

With that said, this whale could be sick with something, or was just starting to develop scoliosis and her pod recognized it, but wasn't obvious to the humans at this point.

                Just a thought.
