    Surgery in Alberta

Has anyone had scoliosis surgery, at the U of Alberta hospital in Edmonton? Under who's care?

    Hi Kootenay,

Welcome to the forum! So sorry about your pain, there are many here that have been down that same road. My surgeon told me that same thing, get online and learn as much as you can before you make a decision. I waited 34 years for my surgery, its hard to believe I made it! (smiley face)

It would probably be a good idea to buy Dave Wolpert’s book. You can buy it through the forum. He did a great job writing it.

Lisanicole is from Edmonton and I believe she was operated in Edmonton. You can PM her.

    Surgery in Alberta

    Hi Kootenaygal,

I indeed did have my surgery at the U of A in Edmonton in 2000. My surgeons were Dr. Moreau and Dr. Mahood. Feel free to email me if you have any detailed questions, I'd love to help.

I’ve had some good times in Canada....it makes it hard to forget.

    Kootenay,
Exactly where are you? If you live down by Invermere, BC, that’s a long trip.

    Surgery in Alberta

Ed...I live in Nelson, BC. I know it's a long trip. About 12 hours from home.
Nothing is close, when you live here...Vancouver, is 8 hours away too.
I was referred to the back surgeon in Edmonton...and will be seeing him again in December.
Thanks for your input, and advice!

Kooteny, how does it work with insurance when you live in BC but are considering surgery in another province? I'm curious b/c the wait lists are so long for kids here in BC but BC Children's did not suggest that I take my son to another province even though his scoliosis was very severe. Out of sheer desperation I contacted Shriners International on the advice from some members here. Sure glad I did!

    re: Surgery in Alberta.

    Hello Elisa,

Thank you for your post...I'm so glad that your son was able to have his surgery !!
At this point, I'm still considering surgery, but looking into whether I will be covered by our MSP.
Wishing your son, the very best in his recovery,
    Kootenaygal.

We live in NB, but our daughter is treated in NS. There are no costs to us as long as you have a valid medicare.
Here are the rules for our province, and I'm sure the other provinces would be the same except maybe for Quebec.

    Hope that helps.

That link is very interesting. From what I gather, you CAN go to another province for surgery and that province bills your own province. WHY the hell does no one tell you these things!? Are they trying to keep it a secret or what? I could have travelled to Alberta a year ago when my son was not nearly as twisted as he was six months ago, had the surgery instead of two surgeries and four weeks of halo traction not to mention all the suffering he went through prior to heading down to the US. It would have been so much more straightforward and I have a brother who lives in Calgary and I could have stayed with him, but no. Makes me furious! Argggg!

Hey did he live in the NW or work at a Gov't science agency near the university campus? Maybe I knew him. :-)

He's a long hauler; drives big trucks all over the place. I'm hoping to take a trip with him sometime in the future. He's got so many stories to tell and I think it would be fun to travel around with him in his big truck. :-)
