  • Replacing Discs

Hi all , i first had surgery when i was 13 in 1976 when i had a Harrington rod fitted .Over the years i have suffered with lower and upper back pain but have managed to keep myself fairly active .5 years ago I was involved in a car accident and i suffered whiplash and a year after that it happened again (just call me lucky) , both times I was stationary when I was hit from behind .The second accident caused a lot of neck pain and when it wouldn't go away I went to see a specialist .Well he said there was a degenerated disc and that the disc was now pushing into the spinal column .I was suffering from lose of feeling down my left arm/hand and on bad mornings this could creep down my left side too , I also suffered from headaches.Last February I went into Maidstone Hospital and had the disc replaced , this procedure is known as a Bryan Disc replacement .The procedure was carried out by a Mr Hammer .Within a few days of the Operation you are up and walking about and then about 5 days after the Operation you are allowed home .You have to wear a soft neck colar for about a month .I suffered a little nerve damage when they took the old disc out which meant i would sometimes get a burning sensation or lose of feeling in my left hand , i was told that nerve damage could take 18 months to mend and 10 months on this is a lot better .I still get a stiff neck and the muscles on the right side are still sore but it is a lot better than it was and no more headaches .I do not suffer from lose of feeling in my arm , maybe just occassionally in my hand but that seems to be improving .
So this is just to let you know there is hope out there for you guys with degenerating discs .

Currently, artificial discs are not used for the treatment of scoliosis.

Hiya Linda , the artificial disc was put in to replace a degenerated disc not as part of an operation for Scoliosis .I know of a guy from Nottingham in England that has had a lower lumber disc replaced.
A lot of Scoliosis sufferers who had the Harrington rod inserted have had problems with degenerated discs as well as flat back syndrome .The Bryant disc replacement is a fairly new procedure and may still be under review in USA , it is being used more in Europe .http://www.spineuniverse.com/display...rticle501.html
theres a picture there of the artificial disc and a good article too .
