  • 6 week post op appt and pre-op appt as well

I saw Dr Bederman yesterday for my 6 week post op appt and my September 9th pre-op appt as well. My xrays look great. He and I are very pleased with the way they look. What he is doing on September 9th is going in thru an 3inch incision is to pack L5 -S1. It really is going to be a minor surgery but I cannot get rid of
this feeling of anxiety that I have.

Dr Bederman gave me until September 9th to stop wearing my back brace. I can still wear the neck brace. Today I am in very bad pain without the brace. I have
been thru this before, last summer, but it still hurts as my back gets used to working again.

Regarding my swollen feet and ankles, he does not want me to take Lasix this close to surgery. He said that we will deal with it after September 9th.

Melissa... To wean yourself gradually from the brace, you might try taking it off for just an hour at a a time, then putting it back on for an hour, etc.

Doreen... There are several different ways to do this type of surgery, but the most common is that they'll remove the disc between L5 and S1, and then replace it with a combination of things like a cage, a bone disc, BMP, moralized bone (the patient's own, or from a donor), etc.

I forgot to say that the other surgeon wants me to stop eating at lunch time next Thursday and only have liquid foods as well as the stuff that is going to clean out my insides. My diabetes doctor is very concerned about this. Has anyone else had to do this before anterior surgery?

Assuming Dr. Bederman knows you're diabetic (or remembered the fact when he made that request) you could ask your Diabetes doctor about liquid foods that would keep up your carbs just enough to prevent a hypo? Are milk-based drinks allowed? Were you asked to do this before your other surgeries? If not, I wonder why this time is different.
          Surgery March 3, 2009 at almost 58, now 63.

stupid question....is the stomach more involved when anterior surgery is performed...?
does a front incision require the no eating rule?

i think you need to maybe remind the surgeon of your diabetes if he didn't say
            anything about it to you...
or just tell him your diabetes specialist is worried about his request that you do not eat....

is your surgery the next day early in the morning...?
