Judy, I did have neck surgery prior to my back surgery. My scoliosis surgeon fused three vertebrae in my neck. He felt that the neck should be done to make the back surgery safer. I had significant stenosis in my neck.

I had the neck surgery about two months prior to my back surgery. I no longer have neck pain, but I have lost a great deal of flexibility in my neck. I am over six months post op with my back. I have a surprising amount of flexibility in my back, but I still suffer from post op back pain.

Let me know if you have any further questions about my surgery. I wish you the best of luck.

U of Utah Hospital has an excellent book on what to expect from fusion surgery

    Hello,

I am also doing my research before spinal surgery and have been looking for info regarding what you all go through before, during and after surgery.

A friend of mine from Utah said the university there was doing some breakthrough discoveries in scoliosis, but haven't found what she was talking about. Either way, I did find an excellent link that has two books you can download in pdf that gives a lot of detail about the whole process.

    This is the link:

    http://healthcare.utah.edu/orthopaed...ion/spine.html

In the middle of the page you'll see two books for the two different fusion surgeries. I found them very helpful.

Welcome to the forum from one newbie to another.
Discovered scoliosis when 15 years old.
Wore Milwaulkee Brace for 1.5 years.
Top curve 85 degrees, bottom curve 60 degrees

Surgery completed August 23, 2011 (during an earthquake, can you believe that?)
