  • Dr. Hey is doing another Shilla procedure

    http://drlloydhey.blogspot.com/2011/...rawing-of.html

Maggie will be having her surgery in May, here in Raleigh, with an anterior release followed by Shilla Technique (Special Growing Rods).
And check this out... two of his AIS patients each spent only two nights in the hospital... surgery on Thursday and home on Saturday. Amazing.

Our two teenage patients who had adolescent scoliosis surgery with us at Duke Raleigh Hospital on Thursday are going home today, after 2 nights in the hospital with their mom and/or dad. Both did very well postop, getting up and walking up and down hall yesterday enjoying their new posture.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?
    Answer: Medicine

Hey! You get some sleep for the trip tomorrow!

DISCLAIMER! I am spit balling with only a little info.

As far as I know, Shilla is a self-expanding rod system. It is like the growth rods but doesn't require an operation every 6 months to expand the rods.

There is a paper in the queue at Spine about diminishing returns on the growth rods wherein you see the main increase in distance between the top and bottom of the spine upon the first expansion. They surmise that is due to spontaneous fusion unfortunately.

If growth rod fail as a non-fusion technique of IIS and JIS because of spontaneous fusion then I think they should be investigated for adults who are having trouble fusing. <- some SERIOUS spit-balling right there!
