By the way, I was good but hdugger was naughty while you were gone.

I wanted to wait until you were feeling a little better to tell you that.

Woah...laughing hurts too much in the first week, surgeons usually don’t release us to laugh for at least 2 weeks.

At the Preparing for Surgery class that I attended at UC, they hand out a list of the 100 funniest movies of all times, and encourage patients to laugh as often as possible. I put There's Something About Mary and Airplane at the top of my NetFlix queue, and watched TSAM last night. (Not as funny as the first time around, but still funny.)

When we laugh, even if we're faking it for the benefit of someone else in the room, endorphins are released. And, I can definitely use all the endorphins I can find!

That is good that you are laughing... something I tried to push during my recovery with all those crazy videos....and it worked well at keeping my lungs clear and the spirits up.

Linda, so glad to learn that you are doing so well this soon after surgery, and I agree with your comments about the importance of laughter and keeping ones good sense of humor during all of this. In the hospital I was cracking jokes with the nurses and doctors and found that it really helped me as well as those caring for me in the hospital. I wouldn't want to go through my surgery/post op again for anything, but I do miss the shared humor while I was there.

As far as movies, I highly recommend both Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. I've watched them both over and over during my recovery and I find them just as funny as the first time I saw them!

"This is Spinal Tap" has been claimed to be "arguably the funniest movie ever made."

I think all those Christopher Guest mockumentaries are so funny that I can't imagine who the actors kept straight faces long enough to film the scenes.

I actually tore my belly button (umbilical herniation) laughing so hard watching “Me, Myself, and Irene” about 10 years ago...you know, when Jim Carrey is on meds for advanced delusionary schizophrenia with involuntary narcissistic rage?

                              Hi...

My recovery took a big leap forward today. Up until now, the medications I've taken have been largely ineffective, regardless of activity level. I've had the typical back pain, incision pain, as well as a lot of leg pain. I've rarely had more than an hour of sleep at a time. This morning, despite the fact that I wasn't supposed to get my incisions wet, I made the executive decision that the incisions looked good enough that it wouldn't hurt them to be wet for a short amount of time. The shower felt great, and it was wonderful to have clean hair. I was so tired afterward that I couldn't keep my eyes open. Before I knew it, I had slept 2 hours. I took my next dose of pain medication and went immediately back to sleep. That went on all morning. I forced myself to stay awake most of this afternoon, but have largely been without pain as long as I'm inactive. I even went an extra hour without medication. In writing about it, it sounds sort of normal, but feels totally miraculous. I'm not sure it will last, but I'm enjoying the time while I have it.

                              Regards,
                              Linda
