    For those who care...

Here is the offending right hind... (rh meas.jpg)

This is a hoof that has been damaged by forces originating from the low grade club foot on the same-side front. The digital cushion is crushed and doesn't appear to be coming back in this lifetime. As a result, P3, the hoof-shaped bone in the hoof, assumes a negative palmar angle. The reason it is almost level in this radiograph is because he is wearing a 3 degree wedge pad.

The really amazing thing about this radiograph is that he has an almost unbelievable 31 mm of sole near the toe. It is ironic that he has such an amazingly healthy hoof apart from the negative PA. This is more than enough to bring P3 slightly positive as it should be and get him out of the wedges. Unfortunately, we have tried just taking off toe but over months, he eventually needs the wedges.

For comparison, here is the club... (rf meas.jpg) note the relatively large positive palmar angle. This is a low grade club which ironically is not bad enough to restrict correct work or cause lameness but bad enough to slowly ping-pong damage back to the same side hind.

My horse was correctly diagnosed and has been stabilized for 3+ years. He was never lame but he was NQR. It took a village and some line-up changes to get the correct diagnosis. The overall health of his feet apart of the club syndrome is a testament to expert farriery and spot-on therapeutic shoeing. And the power of no prayer whatsoever.

Ah, but you don't know if the *horse* was praying

    Ti Ed,

I'm sure I was unclear... my horse has ONE club foot on the front right. Due to biomechanics of that in movement (I ride several days a week in the ring, on trail, doing hill work, etc. etc.), this eventually destabilized the same side hind (right hind) which is now his most pathological foot.

His front left was holding its own but recently presented with a slightly negative PA. That was predicted to happen and is part and parcel with the club syndrome. This is an example of how if you look at 20,000 radiographs like some of these lameness specialist vets do, they can appear clairvoyant with their predicitons. Not magic, just extremely observant and clever in seeing subtle patterns. These specialist vets are truly amazing.

My Pete's best foot is his left hind which is about normal but could be better. The rest are pathological and he is dependent on therapeutic shoeing to stay sound in work.

This equine podiatry is sort of fascinating although I would have preferred no need to know this stuff.

When the list looks like it's fairly complete, I'll put all of the names together in chronological order. Can you tell I'm retired?
    Thanks,

Question Surgery Dec 13th with Dr. Lenke

    Hi all,

I am new to the forum but have been reading for a couple weeks. I am sooo happy to have found this site as I have been struggling with the surgery decision for years. I was first diagnosed at 13 with 48T and 56L curves. They said once I reached skeletal maturity it wouldn't increase...well they were wrong. Today my curves stand at 68T and 80L. I am scheduled for December 13, 2010 for surgery with Dr. Lenke. It's been a tough and long decision process but my pain has dramatically worsened over the past six months so I believe it's time. I wish I could put it off for a few more years but it's affecting my everyday activity and severely limiting my once very active lifestyle. I am getting more nervous about surgery each day but am hopeful for a good outcome as Dr. Lenke is expecting. He said I should gain 2-4 inches in height! I was really surprised by this - has anyone had similar results? To those who have had surgery, what was it like? Are you glad you did it? Any replies and insight is MUCH appreciated!!!

    -Laurie

    Laurie,
Welcome to the forum. It is a great source of information and way to connect with others with scoliosis. Kelly from Dr. Lenke's office gave me the web sitefor the forum. I will see her on Nov. 17th when I go to Barnes for all of my pre-op tests and thank her personally. Good luck with your surgery on Dec. 13th. I know we have an excellent surgeon!

Yes, you both have an excellent surgeon. Laurie, I gained about 1 1/2 inches--which was nice after years of shrinking. I tried to put it off for years too but the last couple years before surgery were just getting worse and worse. I hope both of your surgeries go well! Janet
