  • Sharon's revision update

I went down to visit Sharon at the hospital and she is doing well. Dr Menmuir extended her up to T2 (about 6 levels, I believe) as she was suffering from PJK. She is hoping she will leave tomorrow night, and is already on oral meds.

For 24 hours post having terminated her IV, and only one drain is pretty amazing.....

I have to comment on her room, which was almost as nice as the Prince Hapuna resort on Hawaii. If you are going to stay any length of time in a hospital, it’s a good idea to address having a private room. This is something I didn’t look into, and had very noisy neighbors.........

The visit brought back some memories.

    I bet it did!

Thanks for letting us know Ed. Is she able to stand upright now? Good luck Sharon!

Good advice about the private room too.

Not only can she stand up but she is ready for the wheelchair races in the hallway! And there is some very stiff competition, especially the guy with 2 broken arms racing on a manual wheelchair! lol

Actually, I asked her that question and since it is only the next day, its really hard to judge something like this... Only time will tell, she will let us know.

After 5 years, she is very happy to have this completed. Length of fusion levels is a tough call for the surgeons.

Thanks for writing in, Ed. I am embarrassed to admit I don't recall Sharon's original fusion length - only that dramatic saga about the well-meaning (but adamant) docs who insisted she was "undoable" and would have to live the rest of her life as was. (Unforgettably, "if you were my wife...")

A roller coaster of emotions in which we rode alongside...

Maybe I'll try to look up her original posts about her reluctant admission to disappointment, pain and inability to stand upright. Whew! That was fast.

Give her my ultra best. She's a beacon of hope to the need to follow ones own star (and ignore the despair mongers).

        Yes, I'm listening to myself!
Not all diagnosed (still having tests and consults) but so far:
        Ehler-Danlos (hyper-mobility) syndrome, 69 - somehow,
        main curve L Cobb 60, compensating T curve ~ 30
Flat back, marked lumbar kyphosis (grade?) Spondilolisthesis - everyone gives this a different grade too. Cervical stenosis op'd 3-07, minimally invasive

Looking forward to further Sharon updates, and news that she is indeed upright and straight. Good luck Sharon!

            Amanda,

I actually don’t remember myself! I would say T8-L4. I don’t remember if she was fused all the way down. I don’t remember her saying if she had lower problems, just the PJK thing, and I could see it.

Sharon has determination. I sense incredible healing properties from her, and know that she will prevail in her scoliosis battles. She was ready for her revision, no doubt.

We are friends on facebook, and she just posted this afternoon-- she got home Friday and is feeling better after getting her pain med timing down. She sees Dr. M tomorrow. Her hubby is taking good care of her. She sounded pretty upbeat. Just wanted to let you all know she sounds good.
