the last day or so I was in the hospital for my surgery, I thought I had a UTI. They tested and of course I did. I have a history of UTI's, but in my opinion, for me, it's caused by the catheter. I took one round of antibiotics and it was all gone. Having a UTI postop is considered a 'complication' but it certainly is an easy one to fix.

    Good luck with your daughter.

        resolved!

Just letting you know she has started using the bathroom normally. It took a long time, but it worked itself out.

Glad to hear it worked out. I just wanted to add that the same exact thing happened to me, so although it might not be entirely common it's still normal. It took me until the second to last day I was in the hospital for things to work itself out and it was certainly a nuisance.

yikes. Hope she's fine now with that. The thought of a catheter is killing me, I've never had one before and jeez, it sounds so bad! bah!

I had surgery Mar 1st, 2010 and I, too, had problems "going" after surgery. Seems I was just afraid to let go enough "to go". Maybe a little more information than you needed her. Ha! But, not to worry, it will happen. It gets easier with time very quickly. But, word to the wise, be careful with the pain pills, constipation will creep up on you when you're not watching. Ugh! Besta luck to you.

Hopefully, she's gone by now. The OP was over a year ago.

Hello! I had surgery 2 years ago and I'm no 20 years old. I vaguely remember that very odd sensation of having to go but can't. That's the one unpleasant thing no on bothered to mention about surgery. I hope you don't mind me saying so but I remember specifically how challenging it was to do #1 and #2. My PT said the drugs do not help because they make you constipated. And the biggest reason is the anesthesia. The body wakes up from a medically induced sleep and all the parts are waking up. IT SUCKS! Have her have lots of water and juice because the drugs can do funny things while helping with the pain. It's a weird feeling but I do remember that. Hope that helps! And I hope your daughter has a swift and speedy recovery.

My son had to have the catheter put in for the third time after his first surgery b/c he could not pee. They tried every trick in the book like leave the tap running to make him go but it didn't work. Eventually he did but I was surprised at how much his system shut down with the anesthetic and the narcotics. He Also took a good two weeks to have a bowel movement and that was with lots of fluids, fibre and other 'make go' products. He was more miserable over not going bathroom than he was with the surgery and having to handle halo traction.
