  • pelvic fixation--separate incision or same?

I am just wondering, for those that have lumbar fusions all the way down with pelvic fixation, do you have just a long midline incision, or is/are there separate incisions for the pelvic fixation? I read somewhere that it required additional incision(s).

I will of course ask my doctor, too, but for today, I am curious.

    Thanks,

    Gayle

    Hi Gayle...

I've never heard of a separate incision for pelvic fixation, and as far as I know, it's never been done that way at UCSF.

      Gayle

I have a long anterior incision or scar from my sternum down the front in the center, with a detour around my belly button.

Access down low is best from the front.

Sometimes, they will do a horizontal cut on the waistline.

Lynette had a T10-Pelvis A/P done in April.

                Sorry
I guess I get the post of the month award for that, low meaning lower or lowest vertebrae. L5-S1

It was one of my fastest posts, done at work. I was thinking 2 stage for some reason.

Gayle, you might be thinking about a separate incision used to get bone from the pelvis for grafting.

Ti Ed, you retired that award. I think we should bring it back as:

                        Sheri...

While it may be possible to do the iliac bolts through a separate incision, that certainly isn't the way it's normally done. Is it possible that the separate incision was for taking the bone graft for the fusion?

Linda,I had a transitional L5-S1 segment with a fused L5-S1 region on the right.(Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae)I think that's why he had to make other incision.

                            Sheri...

I still think the scar you're describing is for access to your iliac crest for the bone graft. If they were trying to access L6, the scar would be right in the center.

Do you have bolts in both sides of the pelvis? If so, why do you think there might only be a scar on one side?

                            Regards,
