Do you think it's safe to bring my laptop into hospital when I have my surgery? I'm concerned that when I'm away from the ward at any time - do you think it might get stolen? I LOVE my mac laptop, and don't want to risk it, but knowing I'll be in the hospital for approx. two and a half weeks because I'll be moving into re-hab afterward, I will truly miss my laptop if it's not with me. Any advice would be great!

Hi Lynette
I was told not to bring anything of value as the hospital does not want to be responsible for theft. After you get into your room, it would be safest to have someone bring down all the goodies.
For some reason, I was moved around quite a bit, and was in a few different areas of the hospital for the first few days.

Ed - that's what I figured. So it's probably best to leave it at home. I am definitely taking my Iphone with me though, I'll have my best friend hold it for me till I get into my room, that will be my lifeline to my boys, and also I can post on this forum through my Iphone too that's so long as I can get a connection. I was at a local hospital yesterday getting my chest xrays done and there was no connection on my phone there!Lynette - 44 years old.

My cell worked in the hospital. I guess you wont know till you are there.
I didn’t make very many calls, I wouldn’t have wanted to bother with a computer at that time... Like I said, I would wait a few days, then have someone bring the things you need.
I woke up with a beard! I do grow them fast but it has been about 25 years since I had one. By the time I made it to the bathroom,(I had a 9 day Ileus) that was a shock! All of a sudden, I looked in the mirror, and there was Kenny Rodgers, on drugs. LOL
I needed a razor.

I brought mine, but I also have it covered under a separate rider on my renters insurance. My *son's* laptop (on Okinawa) is also on my policy.
It's cheap to add a computer to homeowner or renter insurance - and well worth it.
Just my $.02.

Thanks Ed and Pam for your input, I think I'll leave the laptop behind, too many important files are on there that I would hate to lose. That picture is of Benny Hill Ed - I recognized him immediately, when I was growing up in Ireland we always used to watch the Benny Hill Show - hilarious stuff!Lynette - 44 years old.

Lynette, I had surgery on December 9th, 2009. I don't know what I would do If I didn't have my laptop! I didnt want to read, but enjoyed using my laptop everyday. I began posting on this forum about two days after surgery. I was at Cedars Sinai Hospital at Beverly Hills, so found out that I was sharing a floor with one of the Kardashian's while she gave birth. Take it with you. My room was safe, but I didn't share a room.

I really really want to bring my laptop with me, because I love going on here and on Facebook, and that could pass many a long hour I'm sure, as I'll be going into re-hab so apparently I may be at the hospital for approx. two and a half weeks, so think I'll risk taking it with me. I'll have my friend hold on to it and my Iphone till I get moved out of the ICU into a regular room, then I could hopefully take it with me wherever I go in the hospital after that. Thanks again everyone for your advice on this.Lynette - 44 years old.

I had my iphone with me and I don't know what I would have done without it. I was able to do pretty much anything I could do on my laptop and keep it with me when I left the room. A friend of mine had surgery in calif. and the hospital had laptops that the patients could use. I guess they had to sign up for them or something. I wouldn't have felt safe bringing my laptop but the iphone was just perfect.

Gosh, I feel a little jealous! Your hospital stays all sound a lot more fun than mine was! You just never know what will happen when you're not there in your room. I was told not to bring anything valuable - the only thing I had was my ipod (my lifesaver!) and my cell phone. I did make a couple of calls so that was handy.
My husband had his laptop with him but didn't leave it unattended - he needed something to keep him busy. I did bring a book but my eyes were blurry and I was not comfortable so I couldn't concentrate anyway. Same with the TV - we didn't turn it on until the night before I was discharged.
If you have someone there with you (I strongly recommend that you do!) perhaps they can bring what you need as you're more able to use it.Julie - 51 yrs old
