  • Brace rubbing on hip bones

    Hi -
My 12-yr-old daughter has been in a Boston Brace for about 5 months. She's been complaining lately that the area around her hips is somewhat chafed. Is it possible that she already needs a new brace, or an adjustment to this one? Would we go back to the orthotist about this, or the referring orthopedic specialist?
    Thanks!

I had surgery in Aug.2009 and have been wearing a brace and I have the same problem with it rubbing on my hip bones. It has not broke the skin but I have what looks to be a bruise and its chapped. Is your daughter thin?Does her hip bones stick out?I wear two shirts under my brace and that helps a little. But I am thin and my hip bones stick out.I have tried taping padding but it just falls off.

I would call the orthotist. Hopefully they can make an easy adjustment. I doubt you'd need to see the orthopaedist.

My daughter went back to her orthodist numerous times for her first boston brace and also after each time she was fitted for a new brace. She had 4 braces in the 2.5 years she wore one so yes your daughter may need a new brace or just an adjustment. Katie's chafing occured mostly on her hip bones to the point of almost bleeding...very painful. Her first 3 braces were fitted from a plastic premade mold and her last was made from a plaster cast . The 3rd one never felt comfortable. Go back as many times as you need to. Its hard enough to wear a brace when its not rubbing .
