  • Average time of surgery?

    Hi everyone,

    Another crazy question right?

Anyway, I just wondered what the length of time of scoliosis surgery is on average, obviously, I know everyone is different, however, I would be very interested to hear how long each and everyone's surgery was, and then just average out how long this surgery typically is.

Hope you are all having a fantastic Valentines Day filled with love, and NO PAIN!!!

My day was with the three people I love very much, my two sons and my mum, and a telephone call from my darling big brother - YAY!!! Doesn't get better than that

I think you will get a good idea if you specify anterior, posterior, or both, and if you say which vertebrae will be fused.

Those will be tightly grouped for your particular type of curve and procedure EXCEPT there will be one outlier... Dr. Hey who seems to be able to do these procedures is much less time than anyone else.

    Good luck.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?

Good advice Pooka 1 - okay then, for anyone who has had surgery from approx. T9 to sacrum posterior only! Just interested to know how long approx. surgery can be - I know it can vary depending on complications, blood loss etc. - just for my own curiosity

Lynette--Not fitting that exactly but mine was also only posterior but more vertebrae--T2-sacrum and was 10 hours. I had cages and osteotomies also so that could be different from yours. They really are all different! Janet

Mine was ±4 hours ... maybe a little more. After about 30 minutes in PACU, I went to a regular room.

And, yes ... they can all be very different: I just noticed Patrick (above) had the same fusion as me.

DAY 1--I had anterior and then posterior day one and that was 9 hrs. They took out vertebrae and put cages in and then flipped me over and started putting in the hardware
DAY 2-- Is when they went posterior again and started to correct my spine I was in surgery for 11hrs. They set the alarms off twice so I guess they had to let my spine rest.. they also cut my side I'm not quite sure as to what they did that for lol.. I was never told anything they told my mom everything..But hopefully when I go back on March 9th I will ask him all about it.

Hi. Dr. Lonner told me that my surgery, minimally invasive anterior through the side and then posterior, would be 8 to 10 hours. Dr. Boachie was going to do posterior only and that would have taken 4 hours. Hope that helps. Joy

Wow - thanks for all your responses, I guess it was a crazy kind of question as everyone is so completely different to the other, depending on so many variables. Just scares the heck out of me knowing I'd be under anaesthesia and opened up for so many hours - wish I could stop being so scared.

I feel like every time I'm thinking of the next few months, it's almost like there is a black cloud hanging over me, however, I've planned to take my mum and my boys to Orlando for a mini vacation once I've recovered and feel well enough - so that gives me something to focus on and look forward to.

Is anyone else a big huge baby like me? I get scared going to the dentist, and the gyno, so this kind of operation - well....

Some of us here share the world record for scaredycatness. Believe me, we know how you feel. I got help - anti-anxiety medication. It helped a LOT. If I hadn't, I'm not sure I'd have been able to turn up on the day. But, it wasn't as bad as I feared. And many of us get a feeling of calm in the last few days. You will get plenty of support here!

I had posterior T11 - S1 and anterior L4/5-L5/S1. I went in at 8.30am and went to recovery at about 4pm. I think th surgeon said he finished at 3.45pm.
Both were done in the same surgery.
