  • back feels weird

My back feels like a board when I try to lean it my back up against a chair. Will that feeling go away eventually? Has anyone else felt like that? Yea I still use a pillow behind it but when I sit in a chair without one I don't lean back cuz of that feeling.

I took a little pillow around with me EVERYWHERE for the first 3-4 months to put behind my back. Still, even now, 16 months later, there are certain hard chairs that are just too uncomfortable to sit it. It DOES get better, but slowly.

Remember, you are a work in progress.

That's a totally normal feeling. I carry a small inflatable pillow with me everywhere and use it a lot.

do you have to wear a brace?! I know when I take my brace off to get changed and I lean back against the chair its the weirdest feeling..I can't feel any part of my back so it such a VERY odd feeling.

                Hi Coffeegirl,

My back felt weird for months. How I used to explain it was that on some days I felt like I had 2 by 4's in there, then 2 by 2's, and as time went on they got smaller and smaller, and there are times I don't even feel the hardware back there.

I'm almost 5 yrs post-op, and I still try to be aware, when I go somewhere, what kind of seating they have. Wooden back chairs still hit me in the wrong places on my back and can't get comfortable. I always have a pillow or jacket that I can lean against just in case. Just try to find out prior to the event.

Bleachers are no fun for me at all, but they have seats that you can adust to your back and it holds you up without pain.

                Hope this helped,
                Shari

sillycoffeegirl do you know the levels of your fusion?

I totally understand the feeling you described, I have it and it is difficult to process the sensation. I am quite confident though the feeling will fade or you will become accustomed to it.

remember, you have most likely lost sensation around the incision site, and it takes quite a while for this sensation to return.

For now it is just toughing it out !

I believe I'm t4 to l4. Mostly the middle. I'm wondering if I ever got the rods out later if it would feel better and more natural. Any body have rods out?

Bethany I do believe you may just need to give yourself a bit more time to become accustomed to the hardware. Try and relax and recover for now

                        Bethany,

Jimbo is right. The more time that passes, the less you will 'know' or 'feel' that your hardware is there. For me, it's the 'new normal' and doesn't feel wierd at all. It's amazing how resiliant we really are.

It took me about 2 years to get used to the rods. I could not stand to feel them at times but it does get better with time!!!

Hi Sillycoffeegirl....I have a question. I will be fused the same as you T4-L4. Can you you bend at all??? I don't know what to expect with that long of a fusion...also, about how long is the incision?

                            Thanks!

                              Laura,

asking Sillycoffeegirl how much she can bend so soon in her recovery is a bad question because at this point, she is supposed to retrict her bending so that she fuses properly.

I am 16 months post-op, and fused T3-L3. I can bend over and pick a penny off the floor if I choose to. And it doesn't feel odd or restrictive either. I find that when I exercise regularly my back feels it's best--which is good incentive.

I had the same concern as you and was freaked out at the prospect of walking around like a wooden soldier--but it's just not the case (for me.)
