  • Irritated and Confused

Hello guys. This is seriously the last place I would've thought to be...but here I am. I've had some back pains/numbness tingling in my left leg for a little while now. I've been told by a family doctor, chiropractor, and physical therapist they are pinched nerves. I am currently healing..fairly well...however, I wanted to get the opinion of an orthopedic surgeon. Afterdoing an X-Ray he discovered I have scoliosis...a 35 degree S shaped one to be exact. I am 21 year old male...I have been examined by doctors almost twice a year (physicals/sicknesses)...every time they examine my back for scoliosis. Even before the X-Ray the Orthopediest didn't notice anything....I have no physical signs of it...no dominant shoulder...no curved hips, no out of place shoulder blades. I'm still baffled...any adults here have scoliosis that isn't visually observable? Am I at risk for progression? He also found Spina Bifida Occulta....which is apparently harmless in most cases. I'm just stunned...I'd be certain that doctors would've caught it...I've seen many doctors over the last 10 years....(over protective mother...wanted me checked out for everything). At first he said it was mild...nothing to lose sleep over. Then after doing, what appeared to be the Cobb Method of measuring the degrees, he said well it's nothing serious...but it's not nothing. He ordered an MRI and an EMG (for nerve damage...i'll be damned if I do an EMG...they cause more problems they then diagnose). Anyways...back to the question. If anyone has mild scoliosis that is unobservable as an adult...I would love to know if your scolioisis has progressed, become observable, caused pain, etc... Thanks.

P.S.: The pinched nerves were the result of squatting 250lbs...after months w/o exercise, stupid move I know. However...the doctor failed to mention that the scoliosis may indeed be non-structural...do you guys think that this might be the case?

    Hi Amin,

Although my daughter was only 12 y.o. when diagnosed, I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents worth in anyway. When she was diagnosed, she too was diagnosed with Spina Bifida Occulta, a Spondolenthesis (sp?), Kyphosis and Scoliosis. The Spina Bifida Occulta and Spondo. have never caused any problem, but they do watch the Spondo. very closely. Like you, my daughter had regular check-ups with our famliy doctor and it wasn't until her 12 year old check-up that he picked up the Scoli. When he looked at her, he said it was probably just a very mild case and he would keep an eye on it, but thankfully he sent us for x-rays because it was 36*. I don't know why it is that some people's Scoli. is very noticeable and not so noticeable for others.

      Hi Amin...

Yes, there's a condition known as functional scoliosis, and I suspect that may be what you have. It can be caused by injury, and might be as a result of your pinched nerve. A scoliosis specialist should be able to tell you for sure by looking at good quality long cassette x-rays.

Thank you very much for replying so quickly...as you can identify with...this issue has kept me away from my studies...and enjoyment for the last 2 days now as I try to learn all I about it. Do you guys think that an MRI will show the definitive underlying cause of this scoliosis (which my orthopedist deemed idiopathic)? Thanks again.

          Hi Amin....

Sorry, I'm not a medical professional, and actually know little about the soft tissues of the body. I hope that the MRI shows something (maybe a disc herniation or tear), and that you can enlighten us about the cause of your scoliosis.

          Best of luck!

            Hi Amin.
I also have a 35 degree thoracolumbar or S curve and have had it for 30 years.Until the last few years the only pain was aching in the lower back, also my curve did not progress in all that time so they don't all get worse.
Unfortunately it can cause other problems such as with the discs deteriorating and causing nerve entrapment due to the constant pressure and rotation.
I have recently had an MRI which showed a badly degenerated/collapsed disc at L4/5, this did not show up on an x ray.I am looking at surgery in the next few months as I am now in considerable pain.
If your pain/pinched nerve does not improve with therapy it may indicate that your weightlifting is not the culprit after all and it may be due to your scoli.By the way,my curve is slightly visible, the most noticable thing is my uneven hips with the right side being a little higher.
            Good luck Cathy

Maybe I'm just tired or worn...but i've begun to notice slight symmetrical differences....maybe its because i lifted a lil bit too much on my right side (not weights!!! just my books/laptop). Anyways...most of the pinched nerves had good results with therapy...however this last one has been irritating...God I hope it's functional scoliosis.... Thanks for your help.
