  • Hip Pain

    Hi,
First and foremost, this is wonderful, I can't believe I never found this website or even thought of looking for a forum. I hope some of you with so much wisdom could shed some light on my concerns and maybe give me some pointers. I had my surgery in 1998 I can't believe how long it's been. i really don't know which vertabrae are affected it's the middle of my back. Like many of you if not all I wore the brace, sort of kinda. Experienced terrible amounts of back pain before my surgery. Was great for about 10 years after my surgery, NO back pain at all. I really thought I was in the home stretch. Only to turn 30 and begin to feel all sorts of new aches and pains AGAIN. It's really disappointing as i'm sure many of you know. Anyway such is life right. I just went to a scoliosis specialist affiliated with the Rothman Institute here in NJ. I thought i may have been in the early stages of needing a hip replacement since i have one leg that is noticably shorter than the other i thought my pain in my hip was caused by the strain i place on my shorter leg. That's why I chose Rothman. The doc told me my hip socket was fine, he saw some arthritis in my lower back which explains the low back pain but like a car you take to the mechanic with a noise that suddenly disappeared, the hip wasn't hurting that day so he couldn't tell what was wrong. does anyone else in the forum have extremely painful sharp shooting pains in their hips. Has a doc told you what it may be? What have you done to releive some of the pain? i've been taking tons of pain med's just to get by the day but that's not good for ya either. Do you think a new mattress may help? My mattress is 5 years old and very firm, could that be my problem? Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

    Emma,
I am sorry that you are still having pain problems. I haven't had hip problems, but prior to my fusion last month, I purchased a 3 in Serta Memory Foam mattress topper that has been HEAVEN on my back, both prior to and now after my fusion surgery. My husband loves it as well (that's whenever I let him sleep on the same bed as me )

Good luck to you and I hope you get some relief.

      Hi Emma,
I had hip pain before I was diagnosed with scoliosis and had one leg that appeared to be shorter than the other by about 3/4". Physical therapy worked for me on the hip pain. When I was finally diagnosed with scoliosis, it turns out my legs are the same length but my pelvis was twisted from the scoliosis. If your legs are not the same length or your pelvis is twisted, the muscles in your hips and legs will not be developed equally and will eventually cause you pain. Either way, PT should help with the pain since you don't have arthritis in your hip joints. Sally

        Emma -
Did the doctor shave your pelvic bone for your fusion or did you have donor bone? If they took bone from your hip, that will cause pain. Most doctors now use donor bone. Where was your fusion? Mine went down to L5 and kept growing on its own to S1. It caused me a great deal of pain and I had difficulty walking. I ended up having surgery to remove most of the extra fusion. That got rid of some of my pain and I was able to walk again.

          Hi,

I too have alot of hip pain. Went for MRI turned out I have a labreal tear in my hip. This can be fixed by either physio and exercise but if that doesnt work than key hole surgery can be done to stitch it back together.
Currently I am trying the exercise option and wil be starting pilates in Jan with an instructor one to one.

              Emma.

I sufferered with hip pain for a long time. Unfortunately, the source of anyone's pain is complex. Find a doctor you trust.

For the pain, you have to keep trying different things. It turns out that a lot of my problem was actually from my back, but before of surgery, I tried changing my mattress (helped a little), muscle strengthening (helped more), and facet block injections (helped temporarily). Every situation is different, just keep working at it in ways that you are comfortable trying and realistic about maintaining. Your body will give you clues. If it comes to surgery in the end, at least you know that you have been working on it in other ways too and makes for a better recovery down the road.

              Best wishes
              p

I had hip pain off and on for years, and never, EVER attributed it to my scoliosis. How stupid I was not to ever go have it checked. I would get episodes every few years that lasted maybe a few months. Motrin always helped it, and after a few months I forgot about it.

I'm hoping now that I've had the surgery, that nasty hip pain will never come back!
