  • Gagging with feedings post op

I had a question about nausea post op. My son is 2 1/2 to 3 weeks post op now. He has had problems with tolerating his G-tube feedings this week. Seemed to do better last week. A lot of gagging and I'm running his pump pretty slow and he still gags. I'm trying to do half water and half formula for each feeding and see if this helps. I'm not sure if he has a stomach bug or if this is normal 2-3 weeks post op. Someone told me anesthesia can take awhile before it is completely out of your system. So I was wondering if this is true and has anyone experienced nausea a few weeks post op?

Its very possible his GI system is still trying to wake up. Especially since he is basically immobile. Has he been having good BMs? If not, he's probably got a lot of stool that's preventing the feeds from being processed in a timely manner. Do you have a GI doc you can talk to to get suggestions on how to help him? I'm sure he's miserable with this. Let us know how things go.

      Hi, Carmell
He has been having good BM's. Which is surprising since constipation was an issue before surgery. I tried the half formula and half water for his feeding and this seems to be working. I think I'll try again this weekend with regular formula feedings. If he is still having problems w/gagging I'll give his gastroenterologist a call next week.
