Thanks Ed. That's a great exhibit. I'd seen many of the pictures they are displayed, but there were also some new ones. I especially love the one with Drs. Bradford, Lonstein, and Winter looking SO young.

And, for those who think that surgeons don't ever consider exercise, notice that on this page:

the very first SRS meeting included a movie on exercise in scoliosis.

It is obvious that they have considered exercise or they won't make the statements they do about it. They aren't guessing.

        Thank you

        Linda

I don't know who would think that their surgeon wouldn't suggest exercise, but its a no brainer. I wouldn't have been doing all that well without exercise all these years.

First thing is, were are lucky that Dr Moe was bored with farming! He became a Doctor in 1930, during the depression and it must have drove him nuts, not to be able to do much for scolis back then. I'm guessing those were the days of Laudanum.

We have come a long long way in the last 50 years. I think about my past experience and where they were at back in 1975. I'm glad I chose the course that I followed which basically included exercise, and Chiropractic. There just weren't many options. I was fortunate that one of my Doctors let me view a video of a 1970s Luque wire procedure that was performed by Dr Winter. I will never forget that video, as he used many small .010/.015 dia wires, probably about 10 per level. There were about 150 or so wires laid out before he twisted them up and cut them off.

Every person on this site, and all scolis, and their parents world wide need to thank Dr Moe and his associates. All of these pioneers of scoliosis have paved the way, have given us hope. My surgeon trained at Twin Cities, being from South Africa, it shows how small our world truly is.

All scoli surgeons use technology that basically leads back in the direction of Minneapolis. When I was a boy scout, my compass was always off. It never pointed to magnetic north, it pointed to Minneapolis. My surgery was inevitable.

        Thank you

Ti Ed, as far as I know, exercise is contraindicated for certain conditions including Marfans.

And if anyone would know that it would be the surgeon. That also means the lay calls on here about self-proscribed PT are somewhat dangerous in my opinion, especially for the scoliosis crowd, some of whom almost certainly have connective tissue disorders like Marfans.

But other than Marfans or suspected Marfans, I am sure surgeons recommend PT for pain relief and such. My chiro recommended it (for a crushed disc) but I wasn't too good about doing it because he admitted it would resolve in a few months no matter what I did or didn't do. Honest guy.

Good post Linda. While I've become aware of the fact that surgeons can and do recommend exercise through the writings of Martha Hawes, I'm not sure everyone understands that. Martha was given exercises from her surgeon, goodness - back when she was eleven. She selected those which she felt were of most benefit and did them faithfully from age 11 to 40.

Her exercises - recommended by her surgeon, was a program essentially outlined in Ponseti & Friedman. More about that found here (on page 6): http://www.scoliosisjournal.com/cont...-7161-4-27.pdf

This may have played an important part in the stability she experienced during this time. The literature supports the benefit of such exercise as well:
Controlled clinical studies are consistent with the possibility that nonstructural and structural scolioses are functionally interchangeable at least in early stages of spinal deformity. Thus, in a group of patients hospitalized for spinal fusion surgery, the spinal rigidity that defines "structural" scoliosis was significantly reduced by an exercise program lasting only eight days (Dickson and Leatherman 1979)." Hawes, 2006 Scoliosis and The Human Spine pg 15.

In Martha's case, chest wall expansion/improvement appears to have been key in providing a secondary benefit of curvature reduction.

Do you know what exercises (medical reference, like Martha's above) are recommended by surgeons today? Based on her continuing research maybe a shift in the future would be good towards chest wall expansion exercises?
