Hello, I am new here. I am 37 years old and have had kyphosis since I was around 19 years old. I saw doctors and had Xrays when I was younger but as I remember no one ever suggested any treatment other than some lame excercises that the physio showed me. I have managed the pain with excercise up until now. Since having my daughter 4 years ago my curve has got worse and is really painful. I have weakness in my legs and have to lift them over my bicycle and into the car. I have aching where the curve is and in my lower back and shoulders and neck with sharp pains in my lower back and pelvis. I am waiting for an appointment to see a consultant. I really want to push them to give me a fusion, BUT....I want another child. I have read that you have to wait a year after surgery before getting pregnant which I feel might be too long as I am 37 and I dont want the age gap between my kids to be so big either. If I have a baby first, how long do I have to wait before I have surgery? Does anyone know? obviously I will speak to the doctors but first hand experience is invaluable. Thank you x

Hi Fandango....

It's a real dilemma. I think it would be wise to wait at least a year before getting pregnant after surgery. The issue comes mostly from having to lift the baby as s/he gets older. You'll most likely be limited to lifting a maximum of 10-15 pounds for at least 6 months, if not more. This is far more of an issue with kyphosis than it is with scoliosis, as lifting puts a lot of force on the upper thoracic spine.
