My son was just diagnosed a few days ago. He is 15 and has a 30 degree curve at T8. We are in the process of getting an appointment with a specialist which is not an easy task. He is very active football, baseball, wrestling, and martial arts. Is it safe for him to continue these activities? If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Just trying to make sure I do the right thing.

Hi...

No one knows for certain, as there would have to be controlled studies to get the answer. I think most specialists tell patients that most sports are good for them.

Linda

Thanks for responding guys. I am learning that everyone's situation is a little different and it probably could be a different answer for each person. As is I am going to let him continue until he gets an appointment with an ortho and we are told differently.

I agree that I've never seen anything indicating that any specialists discourage sports for these kids. I think it should be OK for him to continue all these activities, but of course speak to your doctor.

Good luck!

Hi, My girls play soccer on the same High School team. They played a little earlier than they should have by other doctor's standards. This was fine by daughter who played defense but really hard on the other one who played mid. She was hit in the back 3 times. You could hear the crowd gasp! Even the coach was shaken. We had x-rays for two of the falls. Then she sprained her foot and was out of soccer then basketball. M can't play because of another infection surgery(long story) the other M has after a poor soccer season( put in lower level team) has decided to try again. But she is not really into it. So she is not giving it her all. She is 1/4 there and could be the player she once was but she will need to work on it more and get fire in her heart.I am holding my breath.

Another student athelete had similar surgery and his father was a professional football player. They had a pool outside there house and he really really swam to get in condition. He is playing b-ball very well now.Hope this helps!!
