  • Medical Alert tag

Now that I've had surgery, I've been thinking about getting a medical alert bracelet. I have other allergies and a mitral valve prolapse, so I've been meaning to get one anyway. My question is:

Does anyone else have one and what, if anything, did you list about your fusion/hardware/back? It has to fit on a little tag, so I'm not sure what I would put, if anything.

    Anterior approach fused T12-L4

    Hi Kathy,

My daughter is 18 y.o. and had her surgery at 13. I too thought a medical alert bracelet or necklace would be a good thing, but of course, Jamie didn't agree! We finally agreed on a "business" card for her to carry in her wallet. I chose to put everything on it--Spinal fusion with instrumentation, date of surgery, hospital and doctor who did the surgery and length of fusion. Of course that won't all fit on a bracelet.

    Mary Lou
Mom to Jamie age 21-diagnosed at age 12-spinal fusion 12/7/2004-fused from T3-L2; and Tracy age 19, mild Scoliosis-diagnosed at age 18.

you have a good point. I've had the surgery, antibiotic allrgies and MVP (no symptoms though) as well. Boy am I a mess I never thought about needing something like a bracelet. I'm curious to see other responses.

        Hi Kathy,
i have been toying around with this idea since week 8 post-op. Due to the fact that i love to travel, i came up with the following:- when the next checkup with xrays is due (29.10.09), have the radiographer give you a photo size copy of the instrumentation, then label the back, with name, date of surgery, doctor etc.
Marylou, this kind of sounds similar to your business card suggestion, which is really good also.
With regard to the medic alert bracelet, maybe put "Spinal Fusion" and then list the levels, they're not very big, so nothing much fits on there.

I asked my neuromuscular specialist if he felt I should have a medical ID. He said he didn't see any need for me to have one. Just thought I'd share.
